MUST-SEE: JD Vance Calls Trump During Speech In Hungary
Vice President JD Vance landed in Hungary on Tuesday and wasted little time making it clear where the Trump administration stands: with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the nationalist leader facing a high-stakes election on April 12.
Vance met with Orbán in Budapest and used a joint press conference to spotlight the vote that could threaten Orbán’s long grip on power. Vance has played down suggestions that he traveled to Hungary to personally rescue Orbán politically, but the election dominated his remarks.
“And of course, I want to help as much as I possibly can, the prime minister as he faces this election season, which I believe is happening in just about a week, the election to elect the next Prime Minister of Hungary,” Vance said.
In a moment that set social media buzzing, Vance even placed a call to President Donald Trump during his appearance, a made-for-TV signal that the White House is closely tracking the race and publicly backing Orbán’s camp.
Orbán, seeking his fifth term, has been hammered by critics who say Hungary’s democratic checks and balances have eroded as his allies expanded influence over major institutions and the media. He also faces a serious challenge from opposition leader Peter Magyar, a former insider who broke with Orbán’s party, launched his own in 2024 and has accused the ruling Fidesz party of corruption.
Orbán has long been one of Trump’s closest friends in Europe. He was among the first European leaders to endorse Trump in 2016, and his hard-line approach to immigration has made him a favorite example for MAGA populists. Orbán has spoken repeatedly at CPAC and met with Trump three times in 2024, including once after Trump won the election.
Hungary is a member of the European Union, but Orbán has clashed with Brussels for years, especially over Russia’s war in Ukraine, and has used Hungary’s veto power to frustrate EU efforts to help Kyiv.
Vance argued that Orbán and Trump have done more than anyone to push the war toward an end.
“The war would have never started … if President Trump had been president four years ago, but now that it has started, probably the two leaders who have done the most to actually end that destructive conflict have been Donald J. Trump and Viktor Orban in Hungary,” Vance said.

Trump has already endorsed Orbán and praised him as “strong and powerful.” Orbán returned the favor at Tuesday’s event, thanking Trump and Vance for standing by Hungary.

“We owe gratitude to President Trump and Vice President Vance for standing by Hungary during the past years, the United States of America is the strongest country in the world, and I am happy to say that they are our allies today, the peace and the security of Hungary, therefore, is guaranteed,” Orbán said.
Vance’s Hungary swing follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit in February, as the administration continues building ties with leaders who share its priorities on borders, sovereignty and security.
