WATCH: Biden Pulls Black Man On Stage, Says He Looks Like Barack Obama In Bizarre Moment
President Joe Biden was involved in a head-scratching interaction when he returned to his alma mater, Syracuse University, for the unveiling of his official portrait at the College of Law’s Dineen Hall.
Biden, who graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968, traveled to the university for the ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. The private ceremony featured the display of an oil-on-canvas portrait painted by artist Michael Shane Neal, which will hang permanently in the Law Library Reading Room and be available for public viewing during regular library hours.
During his speech, Biden addressed the audience and singled out Jeffrey Scruggs, chairman of the Syracuse University Board of Trustees
“Mr. Chairman and Chancellor-Elect Dean, by the way I always want to turn around one guy say Barack what are you doing?” He then gestured toward Scruggs and said, “Come here, come here, come here.”
Scruggs, who is Black, approached the stage smiling as Biden continued speaking. Biden added remarks about positioning, including a reference to standing “on the left,” before the two men shook hands onstage

Tuesday’s event marked one of Biden’s occasional public appearances since leaving office in January 2025. In recent months, Biden has maintained a relatively low profile but has been spotted in everyday settings, including occasional trips to coffee shops and Philadelphia sports outings.
In March 2026, Biden spoke at the funeral of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, where he offered brief comments on the current political climate.
The muted profile comes as the former president continues to undergo treatment after he was diagnosed with an advanced form of prostate cancer last year. His office announced that he would receive hormone therapy and radiation treatment immediately after the diagnosis was disclosed last May.
Radiation therapy began in October 2025 and lasted approximately five weeks at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia. Biden completed the course of radiation on October 20, 2025, and marked the occasion by ringing a ceremonial bell with his care team.
Medical experts have noted that while metastatic prostate cancer is not curable, it is often manageable for years with current therapies, including hormone treatments that can extend survival.
