JUST IN: Hunter Biden Flees America As Legal Troubles Mount
Hunter Biden has reportedly left the United States as legal and financial troubles continue to pile up, according to a new court filing.
The former first son’s attorney, Barry Coburn, revealed the move in an April 6 filing tied to a civil lawsuit over unpaid legal fees.
“Mr. Biden lives abroad,” the document stated. “He cannot pay his current lawyers.”
The filing did not disclose where Biden is currently living. The 56-year-old had previously said he was spending time in Cape Town, South Africa, where his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, is from.
“When all of the political and personal stuff came to an end in the last six months, I had always promised that we would spend some time over here,” Biden said during a November appearance on The Wide Awake Podcast, based in South Africa. “We’re trying to be between Cape Town and the States, go back and forth.”
“I’ve fallen madly in love with Cape Town,” he added. “You guys do not know how good you have it here. It’s the most beautiful city in the world.”
Despite the apparent move overseas, Biden was recently spotted stateside. Photos shared on Instagram by his sister, Ashley Biden, showed him with family members — including former President Joe Biden and Jill Biden — in Santa Ynez, California, over Easter weekend.
The latest disclosure came in a Washington, D.C., civil case brought by Winston & Strawn LLP, a firm that previously represented Biden in a string of high-profile criminal matters that drew national attention.
According to the filing, Biden still owes a “substantial portion” of his legal bills and lacks the resources to cover them. The document also states he cannot afford outside help for the case and has resorted to manually searching his own emails for relevant records.
Biden has publicly acknowledged the financial strain. During his podcast appearance, he said he is carrying “$17 million in debt … as it relates to my legal fees.”
His legal troubles have been extensive. In 2024, Biden was convicted on charges tied to the illegal purchase of a firearm in 2018, after prosecutors showed he falsely claimed he was not using drugs while struggling with a crack cocaine addiction.
He also pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges, including three felonies, related to a scheme to avoid paying $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019.
President Joe Biden later issued a sweeping pardon in December 2024, wiping away his son’s federal convictions.
