NEW: Disgraced Democrat Lawmaker Files For Re-Election After Felony Conviction
U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) submitted her candidacy paperwork for re-election to Florida’s 20th Congressional District on April 17, just four days before announcing her resignation from the House of Representatives. The surprise filing comes after the former lawmaker faces multiple felony charges relating to COVID-19 pandemic relief fraud.
The filing, which was recorded with the Florida Division of Elections, listed her as a Democrat candidate for the 2026 general election and kept her status as active. Her campaign maintained open Federal Election Commission accounts, and a campaign aide confirmed to reporters that she intends to pursue the seat.
“I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt. I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on, and my good name to be tarnished,” Cherfilus-McCormick said when announcing her resignation earlier this week.
“Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida’s 20th district,” she added.

The decision came moments before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to consider disciplinary recommendations, including possible expulsion. Back in March, the committee’s adjudicatory subcommittee held a rare public trial and determined that 25 of 27 allegations against her had been proven.
The violations centered on campaign finance rules, improper acceptance of contributions, commingling of personal and campaign funds, and false financial disclosures. The underlying facts involved roughly $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds that were fraudulently overpaid to her family’s healthcare company during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prosecutors alleged that Cherfilus-McCormick directed portions of those funds to support her successful 2022 special-election campaign for the seat, which she won by a narrow margin.
Separately, Cherfilus-McCormick faces federal criminal charges filed in November 2025 in Miami. A 15-count indictment accuses her of theft of government funds, money laundering, straw-donor contributions, and conspiracy to file a false tax return.
Federal prosecutors have alleged that some of the money was used for personal purchases, including a 3-carat yellow diamond ring. Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains her innocence. Her federal trial, originally set earlier, has been postponed until February 2027. If convicted on all counts, she could face a maximum sentence of 53 years in prison.
Florida law permits a candidate who has resigned from office to remain eligible for the ballot in the subsequent election cycle, provided qualifying deadlines are met. The candidate filing deadline for Florida’s 2026 congressional races was April 24, placing Cherfilus-McCormick’s filing within the margin.
The former lawmaker will likely be facing an uphill battle, however, as several additional candidates have already filed to replace her.
Florida’s 20th Congressional District covers portions of Broward and Miami-Dade counties in Southeast Florida and is the state’s most Democrat-leaning district. The Cook Political Report’s Partisan Voter Index rates it D+22 based on the 2020 and 2024 presidential results, indicating it votes approximately 22 percentage points more to the direction of the Democratic Party than the national average.
