Corey Comperatore’s Widow Believes Powerful Democrats Plotted Trump Assassination Attempt In Butler
The widow of Corey Comperatore, the firefighter killed during the attempted assassination of President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, says she believes powerful political figures may have played a role in the attack.
Helen Comperatore, whose husband died shielding others during the July 2024 rally shooting, has spoken publicly about her grief and growing suspicions. While she has pushed back forcefully against conspiracy theories suggesting the event was staged, she has voiced her own belief that the gunman may not have acted alone.
“I do not believe that this kid just got out of bed that day and decided to come over there and kill the president,” she said to The New York Times, suggesting the possibility of outside influence or coordination. She added that she believes the shooter “was involved with someone greater than him.”
Her comments come amid a wave of speculation and political tension following the Butler attack and a separate attempted assassination incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Both events have fueled debate online and across political circles, with competing narratives emerging from both the left and right.
Despite her suspicions, Comperatore has also been vocal about the emotional toll of conspiracy theories—especially those claiming the shooting was staged or orchestrated to benefit Trump politically.
“When they say it was staged,” she said. “Like any of that’s staged. I mean, how? Why would you think that the president would stage taking a bullet? I mean, that’s insane.”
Senator Rand Paul, who led one review, described the incident as the result of “a complete breakdown of security,” citing lapses in coordination between the Secret Service and local law enforcement. In a message sent before the attack, the gunman reportedly took sole responsibility, writing that he did not see “anyone else picking up the slack.”

“When your husband’s killed like that, when you’re tied up with the government and the president’s involved, you have no idea,” she said. “Your mind goes crazy.”
Her distrust has also been shaped by political rhetoric leading up to the attack. She referenced remarks made by Biden during a donor call, in which he said it was “time to put Trump in a bull’s-eye,” a comment Biden later acknowledged was poorly worded. Comperatore said the remark contributed to her decision not to engage with Biden after the shooting.
“That’s why I didn’t take Biden’s call,” she said. “I thought he set something up.”
At the same time, she has rejected claims that her husband’s death was part of a broader political scheme to influence the election. “I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said.
Corey Comperatore, a longtime firefighter, has been remembered as a hero who died protecting his family. His widow described him as her “soul mate,” adding that their lives changed instantly that day.
“We went from having a beautiful family day together to leaving there,” she said. “It was the worst day of our lives.”
As investigations continue and political debate rages, Comperatore says she is trying to focus on her family and move forward—though questions about what happened in Butler still linger.
“I want to know what happened,” she said. “My whole family wants to know what happened.”
“At the end of the day my husband’s gone,” she told The Times. “The pain is there and how he died was disgusting, and my kids and I should never have had to see that.”
“We went from having a beautiful family day together to leaving there,” she said, her voice breaking. “It was the worst day of our lives and we’ll never forget it.”
