Lionel Richie was forced to cut short the opening night of his 2026 North American tour after becoming ill on stage Wednesday evening, prompting paramedics to transport the music icon to a local hospital as a precaution.

The 77-year-old singer was performing at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he suddenly began experiencing dizziness roughly an hour into the concert. The performance marked the kickoff of Richie’s highly anticipated “Sing A Song All Night Long” tour alongside legendary R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire, a 26-city run scheduled to continue through the summer.

According to reports, Richie appeared to struggle during a performance of his hit song “Dancing on the Ceiling,” an energetic staple of his concerts that typically has the Grammy-winning performer moving around the stage. Instead, concertgoers noticed Richie repeatedly sitting down on one of the stage platforms while continuing to sing.

Addressing the audience with his trademark humor despite the situation, Richie acknowledged that he was feeling unwell.

“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your ass down,” he joked, drawing laughter and applause from concerned fans.

After taking a moment to recover, Richie moved to the piano and delivered a seated performance of his classic ballad “Three Times a Lady.” He then informed the audience that he needed to take a brief intermission before leaving the stage while members of his band continued entertaining the crowd.

Approximately 40 minutes later, Richie’s saxophonist, Dino Soldo, returned to the stage with disappointing news for concertgoers.

Soldo told the audience that Richie was not feeling well enough to continue the show, officially bringing the concert to an early conclusion.

According to TMZ, emergency personnel met Richie backstage following his exit from the stage before transporting him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Sources connected to the singer told the outlet that the trip to the hospital was made out of an abundance of caution, though no additional details about his condition were immediately released.

As of Thursday morning, Richie’s representatives had not issued an official statement regarding his health, and no diagnosis had been made public.

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris later said Richie appeared to be in good spirits before taking the stage and showed no obvious signs of illness during rehearsals earlier in the day. Paris suggested dehydration may have contributed to the episode.

Earlier Wednesday, Richie had shared photos from rehearsals on social media, expressing excitement about launching the tour in Minnesota. The concert represented the first stop on a lengthy North American run that is scheduled to visit 26 cities, with Earth, Wind & Fire serving as the opening act throughout the tour.

The next scheduled performance is set for Friday night in Chicago, though it remains unclear whether Richie will be well enough to return to the stage. Tour organizers have not yet announced whether any upcoming dates will be postponed or rescheduled.

Richie, whose career spans more than five decades, first rose to fame as a member of The Commodores before launching one of the most successful solo careers in pop music history. With timeless hits including “Hello,” “All Night Long (All Night),” “Stuck on You,” “Truly,” and “Say You, Say Me,” he has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and remains one of the most recognizable performers in the music industry.
