‘Young Washington’ Outperforms Box Office Projections, Tops ‘Supergirl’
Angel Studios’ Young Washington, a historical film that focuses on George Washington’s early life, exceeded pre-release projections during its opening weekend of July 3-5. The movie, which depicts George Washington’s early military experiences during the French and Indian War, earned an estimated $20.8 million domestically from approximately 2,700 theaters.
Industry forecasts ahead of the weekend placed the film around $15 million, with some tracking estimates ranging from $12 million to $17 million. Actual results surpassed these figures by roughly 40 percent, according to updated Sunday estimates.
The film posted a solid $7.6 million on Friday alone, contributing to its three-day total. This performance positioned Young Washington among the top weekend releases, finishing only behind major family-oriented holdovers and new entries such as Minions & Monsters and Toy Story 5, while securing a notable spot in the upper rankings for the lucrative July 4 holiday frame.
The per-theater average reached about $7,700, reflecting efficient distribution on a moderate screen count compared to wider releases. Audience reception supported the numbers, with reports of strong word-of-mouth and positive CinemaScore feedback contributing to the overperformance relative to initial expectations.
In a direct weekend comparison, Young Washington outperformed Supergirl in its second weekend. The DC Studios release, in its sophomore frame, collected approximately $9.6 million to $10 million after a significant percentage drop from its opening.
This placed Young Washington ahead of Supergirl despite the latter’s established franchise backing and much larger marketing budget. Young Washington was made for an estimated $20 million. In contrast, Supergirl carried a reported production budget in the range of $170 million to $275 million, before additional marketing expenses.

The opening marks Angel Studios’ largest live-action debut to date. It trails only the studio’s animated release David among all its openings and surpasses previous live-action efforts such as Sound of Freedom.
Young Washington, directed by Jon Erwin, centers on the early life of George Washington before he became the first U.S. president. The story follows a young Washington, played by William Franklyn-Miller, as he navigates military service, alliances, and conflicts during the French and Indian War in the 1750s. Key events include his assignment to deliver a message to French forces in the Ohio Country, interactions with Native American leaders, the Battle of Jumonville Glen, and the defense of Fort Necessity.
“Before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage. As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming,” the film’s official synopsis states.
The star-studded supporting cast includes Mary-Louise Parker, Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Kelsey Grammer and Joel Smallbone. It received a limited premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June 2026 before its wide theatrical release on July 3.
