CNN Flamed For Humiliating Mistake In Mitch McConnell Segment

CNN was mocked after the network appeared to mistake a parody X account for a real Republican congressman during a segment about Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health.

The embarrassing slip happened Wednesday on “CNN This Morning,” when the network displayed a post from the fake “Rep. Jack Kimble” account alongside real comments about McConnell from top Republican figures.

The graphic included statements from spokespeople for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso and conservative commentator Scott Jennings.

Then came Kimble.

“I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He’s still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 45 minutes,” read Kimble’s Tuesday X post — which CNN featured on the Wednesday morning segment.

Host Audie Cornish appeared to reference part of the parody quote while discussing Republicans saying they had spoken with McConnell.

“So, you have a lot of Senate Republicans coming out, we’re just going to show some on screen … all saying I talked to him, I talked to him, I talked to him for 20 minutes, I talked to him for 45 minutes,” she said, with the “45 minutes” part appearing to reference the parody account.

Kimble later mocked the network on X after the segment drew attention online.

“CNN’s Extreme leftwing bias exposed,” Kimble wrote on X later Wednesday morning, including a screenshot of the side by side posts.

The account’s bio makes clear it is not a real lawmaker.

Kimble describes himself as a “Republican Representing CA’s 54th Dist. & co-sponsor of Poe’s Law. Detective Jesus #1: Thou Shalt Not Kill is out on Amazon,” according to the parody account’s X bio.

California has only 52 congressional districts.

The fake campaign site also carries an obvious joke.

“My campaign has been working hard to contact you about your car’s extended warranty,” according to Kimble’s “campaign” website.

CNN issued an on-air correction Thursday after the mistake was called out.

The network’s blunder came as McConnell’s health has remained the subject of intense public speculation.

The Kentucky Republican, a former Senate majority leader, was hospitalized June 14 after paramedics responded to his Washington home.

McConnell’s office later circulated multiple statements from senators and allies saying they had spoken with him.

Thune, who succeeded McConnell as Senate Republican leader in 2025, reportedly had a “lengthy and substantive conversation” with McConnell about national security.

Jennings has also said he spoke with McConnell for nearly 20 minutes and described him as engaged.

But the lack of public appearances from McConnell has kept questions alive.

And CNN’s decision to put a fake congressman’s post on screen only gave critics another reason to pile on.

The network wanted to show Republicans vouching for McConnell’s condition.

Instead, it briefly vouched for a parody account representing a district that does not exist.
