Democrat Rep. ‘Active And Alert’ After Hit-And-Run Puts Her In Hospital

Ohio Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur was hospitalized Sunday after a suspected hit-and-run crash while traveling to church in Toledo, leaving the veteran lawmaker with injuries police said were not life-threatening.

The 80-year-old congresswoman was riding as a passenger when the vehicle she was in was struck, according to Toledo police. Her driver was also injured in the collision, and both were taken for medical treatment. Authorities said Kaptur was in stable condition.

“This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck,” a statement posted to Kaptur’s X account said. “She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Her office said it is awaiting additional information from the Toledo Police Department as detectives continue investigating the crash.

“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.”

Kaptur also thanked the hundreds of constituents who reached out with well wishes and said she hopes to return to her normal schedule soon.

Police said the crash happened around 10:48 a.m. near the intersection of North Detroit and West Central avenues. Kaptur was riding in a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Kegan Zimmerman when it was hit, according to investigators. Both vehicles involved were impounded as officers processed evidence.

The other driver fled before officers arrived, prompting a hit-and-run investigation.

Investigators said they have made “significant progress” and are pursuing several strong leads to identify the driver responsible. A witness told WTOL the suspect was picked up by another vehicle and driven away from the scene after the crash.
