Kelly Ripa Reveals Habit That Led To Major Surgery
Kelly Ripa recently discussed a longstanding oral care routine that contributed to gum recession requiring surgical intervention. The television host shared details during an episode of her podcast, “Let’s Talk Off Camera,” while speaking with guest Michelle Buteau, the creator of “Survival of the Thickest.”
Ripa explained that she brushes her teeth with greater frequency than typically recommended. “I brush my teeth too much,” she said. “It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.”
She noted that the procedure had been advised five years earlier. At that time, she postponed it. More recently, her doctor indicated that further delay was no longer advisable, stating there was no longer the luxury of additional time.
The surgery required a recovery period during which Ripa limited speaking. As a result, she missed several live episodes of the morning program she co-hosts with her husband, Mark Consuelos, titled “Live with Kelly and Mark.”
Consuelos addressed the situation on the show while speaking with musician Nick Jonas. He described efforts to support adherence to post-operative guidelines, which included restricted conversation. Consuelos observed that maintaining silence presented a particular challenge given Ripa’s usual engagement in discussion. Jonas remarked on the difficulty of the restriction for someone known for conversation.
Consuelos also mentioned monitoring the healing process at home. On one occasion, Ripa requested that he examine the surgical site. He declined to manipulate the area directly and instead assessed it from a distance, reporting that it appeared satisfactory.
He further noted that the level of discomfort stood out because Ripa typically reports limited sensitivity during routine dental visits and often proceeds without local anesthetic. In this instance, the recovery involved noticeable discomfort.
Gum recession can occur when gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, potentially exposing root surfaces. Contributing factors may include mechanical irritation from vigorous or frequent brushing, among other elements such as genetics or periodontal conditions. Surgical approaches sometimes involve grafting tissue to restore coverage in affected areas. In Ripa’s case, the procedure addressed recession linked to her described brushing practices.
