NEW: Ex-Democrat Senator Makes Shocking Admission In Court
Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema acknowledged under oath that she repeatedly had sex with her married security guard while serving in the Senate, according to federal court filings in a lawsuit brought by the man’s ex-wife.
Sinema, who was elected as a Democrat before becoming an independent, gave the testimony during a July 31 deposition in a case filed by Heather Ammel, the former wife of security guard Matthew Ammel.
Heather Ammel is suing Sinema under North Carolina’s alienation-of-affection law, alleging the former Arizona senator helped destroy the couple’s 14-year marriage.
Sinema’s legal team moved the case to federal court and has sought to have it dismissed, arguing that the alleged relationship occurred outside North Carolina and that the court lacks personal jurisdiction over her.
During the deposition, Sinema said she first had sex with Matthew Ammel around Memorial Day 2024 while staying at an Airbnb in Napa, California.
“We were staying at an Airbnb in Napa, California. We were outside. Matt kissed me. We went inside and had sex,” Sinema said.
Sinema said the property was being shared with friends Penny and Grant Croissant and another member of her security detail.

She testified that the relationship continued the following month in New York City, where she attended the wedding of CNN anchor Jessica Dean.
Sinema and Ammel had separate hotel rooms but were “intimate” in Sinema’s room, according to her testimony.
In mid-July, Sinema said the two had sex again at her Washington, D.C., apartment after taking a red-eye flight from the West Coast.
The pair then traveled to Aspen, Colorado, in mid-August for what Sinema described as a “fundraising trip,” where she testified they had sex again.

Sinema said she could not recall another alleged encounter in Washington in late September, though Ammel reportedly confirmed it during his own deposition.
The relationship continued into October 2024, when Sinema said the two had sex at her home in Phoenix.
Sinema also acknowledged that she knew Ammel was married and had three children while the relationship was taking place.
The deposition included questions about personal messages Sinema sent to Ammel.
At one point, a lawyer asked about a photograph Sinema allegedly texted while wrapped in a towel.
“I’m an endurance athlete. So a photograph of me with cupping marks is about sports,” Sinema responded, while saying she did not specifically remember sending the towel photo.
Another message from Sinema read, “Putting my hand on your heart. I’ll see you soon. I miss you.”
The attorney pressed her on how that message might look to Ammel’s wife.
“You understand, Ms. Sinema, don’t you, that a wife reading this might get concerned about who is sending her husband that kind of message referring to putting his — her hand on his heart? Can you see that?” the lawyer asked.
“Yes,” Sinema said.
Heather Ammel testified that she discovered the affair after her husband returned home “severely intoxicated” while they were staying at her parents’ house.
During her deposition, she read another message she said she found on her husband’s phone from Sinema.
“I hope your day was okay. Thinking of you. I am with you. I keep waking up during my sleep and reaching over for your arms to hold me,” the message said.
Heather Ammel had described Sinema in a June 2024 text as “insidious” and “a woman who is willing to break up a family.”
She later testified that her former husband was an “established liar and manipulator” and said she believed he was “actively manipulating” both her and Sinema.
The Ammels separated Nov. 1, 2024, and their divorce was finalized in March 2026, according to court records.
Sinema left the Senate at the beginning of 2025 after opting against another run.
The legal fight is far from over. Court documents show an evidentiary hearing in Heather Ammel’s case against Sinema is scheduled for Aug. 19.
