REPORT: CNN Star Makes Major Decision On Future With Network

Published

on

CNN primetime host Abby Phillip has signed a new contract to remain at the network, according to a report from Variety.

A CNN spokesperson declined to comment on talent contracts when approached by Variety, stating that the network does not discuss such arrangements. No public statements from Phillip herself regarding the renewal have been released as of this report.

The timing of the agreement places it amid broader developments involving CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, and a proposed acquisition by Paramount Skydance valued at approximately $110 billion including debt. The deal has cleared federal antitrust review but faces legal challenges from multiple states.

The Variety report indicates that Phillip’s renewal, combined with prior arrangements for other hosts, means that the anchors of CNN’s three primary primetime programs are under contract for the foreseeable future. Anderson Cooper, who hosts the 8 p.m. hour, renewed his terms in the previous year while Kaitlan Collins, host of the 9 p.m. program The Source, is understood to have several years remaining on her existing contract.

Sources familiar with the matter noted that the network handled the renewals as individual contracts came up for consideration rather than as a coordinated strategy related to potential ownership changes. The agreements provide the anchors with certain contractual guarantees regarding compensation in the event of schedule or role adjustments.

Phillip currently anchors CNN NewsNight, the network’s 10 p.m. ET program that features a roundtable format with guests discussing the day’s major stories. The show’s discussions have frequently produced clips that circulate widely on social media. In addition to her weeknight duties, she hosts Table for Five, a Saturday morning roundtable program, and the digital series Confessions and Obsessions, which focuses on guests’ personal interests.

Prior to assuming the permanent hosting role on NewsNight in August 2023, Phillip served as a senior political correspondent for CNN and anchored Inside Politics Sunday. She joined the network to cover the Trump administration and earlier worked as a national political reporter at The Washington Post, a digital politics reporter at ABC News, and a White House reporter at Politico focusing on campaign finance and lobbying.
