REPORT: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Plan New Move 6 Years After Relocating To The United States

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, plan to relocate from the United States to Britain later this month with their two children. The move comes six years after the couple stepped back from their senior royal roles and relocated to the United States.

The family intends to establish a primary residence at a private, non-royal property outside London for an extended period. Their children, Prince Archie, aged 7, and Princess Lilibet, aged 5, are enrolled to begin attending a British school in September, according to a report from the Daily Telegraph.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the relocation in a statement to CBC News, stating that the couple will continue to live as private citizens.

King Charles III was informed of the decision on Sunday, according to The Telegraph. The move was not discussed during the family’s visit to Britain last month, when Harry, Meghan, and their children met the King at his Highgrove residence in Gloucestershire. That July meeting marked the first time the King had seen his grandchildren in person since 2022 and was described by the Palace as a private family occasion.

The King welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family in a private and personal capacity, according to people familiar with the matter. Prince William and Princess Catherine have also been informed of the plans.

There are no current plans for either Harry or Meghan to resume roles as working members of the royal family. They will remain non-working royals and private individuals, consistent with the arrangement reached when they stepped back from official duties. Their status will not change as a result of the relocation, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

This decision follows the couple’s earlier departure from Britain. In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their intention to step back as senior members of the royal family. They left the United Kingdom in March 2020 after a transition period, initially spending time in Canada before settling in Montecito, California, later that year.

The couple has lived primarily in the United States for the past six years while pursuing independent careers, including media projects and Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever.

The family will retain their home in Montecito, California, as well as a vacation property in Portugal. The specific location of the new British residence and the children’s school has not been disclosed for privacy reasons. Sources indicated that the United Kingdom will serve as the family’s primary base for an extended period, though it has not been determined whether the arrangement will become permanent.

Security arrangements for the family upon their return have not been detailed publicly. In previous years, Harry has raised concerns about security provisions in the United Kingdom following the loss of automatic police protection after the 2020 change in status. A Home Office spokesperson has stated that decisions on protective security are made by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures and that the system is rigorous and proportionate.

No direct public statement from Harry or Meghan detailing personal reasons for the move has been released in connection with the reports. Information has been provided through sources familiar with the decision and confirmations from representatives and the Palace.
