NFL Star’s 2-Year-Old Son Passes Away In Tragic Accident

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver is mourning the death of his son, who was found unresponsive in a swimming pool outside Houston just days before his second birthday.

The toddler, also named Ed, died June 28 after family members discovered him in the pool at a residence in Harris County, Texas. The accident was made public months later.

A source close to Oliver said the grieving family is asking for “privacy and prayers at this very difficult time.”

The Bills publicly addressed the tragedy Saturday after privately supporting Oliver since the incident occurred.

“On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devasting loss of his son,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane said. “It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss.”

The team had known about the death since June and worked with Oliver on when to disclose it publicly. The defensive tackle has continued participating in team activities throughout training camp.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence June 28 following a life-in-danger call.

When deputies arrived, they were told the child’s parents had found him unresponsive in the swimming pool, according to the sheriff’s office.

The boy was rushed by ambulance to a Houston hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:18 p.m.

Authorities did not identify Ed Oliver or his family in their account of the incident. The sheriff’s office also did not respond to a recent request for an update on its investigation.

Oliver did not travel with the Bills for their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns because he was nursing a minor injury. Buffalo had also decided in advance that most veteran starters would sit out the game.

The 28-year-old Ed Oliver has spent his entire NFL career in Buffalo since the Bills selected him ninth overall out of Houston in the 2019 NFL draft.

He also has a daughter, Ava.
