NEW: Key Senate Race Rocked By Democrat Candidate’s Sick 9/11 Posts

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing fresh scrutiny over deleted social media posts about 9/11 that are resurfacing just weeks before the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The old posts, highlighted Monday by CBS News, immediately sparked a firestorm around El-Sayed and his increasingly controversial Senate campaign.

“As the nation prepares to mark 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001, Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, may be facing the risk of renewed scrutiny and fresh political attack,” CBS News wrote Monday.

Among the posts was a 2020 message in which El-Sayed compared the nearly 3,000 Americans murdered on 9/11 to the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic.

Another post from Sept. 11, 2021, first uncovered by The Washington Free Beacon, drew an even more inflammatory comparison between the terror attacks and U.S. military action overseas.

“Today, I mourn the 3K lives, 6K injuries, & infrastructural devastation in NYC, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my faith. Tomorrow, I’ll mourn ~1M lives, millions of injuries, & infrastructural devastation in 3 countries, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country.”

The comments are now threatening to become another major liability for El-Sayed as he fights for an open Senate seat in one of the country’s most important battleground states.

But rather than address why a candidate for the U.S. Senate deleted the posts in the first place, prominent voices on the left lashed out at CBS News for reporting on them.

“What an insane headline,” far-left commentator Hasan Piker reacted on X. “This is why the [new Paramount owner David Ellison] bought CBS and put Bari Weiss in charge.”

Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan also accused the network of Islamophobia for tying the story to the upcoming 9/11 anniversary.

“Hi @CBS @CBSNews @bariweiss do you think it’s super offensive and disgusting and Islamophobic to do a tweet about the potential first ever Muslim Democratic senator which begins by referencing 9/11?” Hasan asked.

Tim Miller, a host with The Bulwark and an MS NOW analyst, piled on.

“Despicable anti-Muslim woke right garbage from the house CBS account,” Miller wrote.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., also attacked the report.

“What an insane, blatantly racist headline. Unreal,” Ansari posted.

The reaction quickly turned the controversy into a familiar media spectacle, with liberal commentators appearing more outraged at the scrutiny than at the deleted posts themselves.

Vox host and editorial director Astead Herndon joined the criticism.

“The current state of institutional media legit bums me out,” Herndon said. “We’ve burned through so much credibility in recent years. And our information ecosystem is worse for it.”

A CBS News source familiar with the story brushed off the backlash, telling Fox News Digital that reports about politicians’ deleted social media posts are published “all the time.”

El-Sayed was later confronted directly about the posts by a local CBS reporter on the campaign trail.

“What happened on 9/11 is a disaster. It was a terrible attack on our country,” El-Sayed said. “And our responsibility is also to think about, how do we build an America where we are protecting our servicemen and women from being asked to fight in wars we have no business fighting in?”

The resurfaced posts add to a growing pile of controversies surrounding Abdul El-Sayed as Republicans work to define him as a far-left candidate out of step with Michigan voters.

His record and past rhetoric are likely to remain central issues in the race, especially as voters take a harder look at statements he once apparently preferred to delete.

And with the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, the timing could hardly be worse for a Democrat trying to convince Michigan voters that his judgment belongs in the United States Senate.
