JUST IN: One Shot In Immigration Enforcement-Related Shooting In Texas

A federal immigration agent shot and wounded a man Sunday in Austin, Texas, according to city officials.

The shooting took place in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane near U.S. 183 and Research Boulevard, according to three state and local officials briefed on the matter who spoke with the Austin American Statesman. The wounded man was transported to a hospital by Austin-Travis County EMS and was described as alert and talking, per the city’s communications office.

“Austin police officers were not involved in the situation and we do not know what led to the incident,” an email sent to city council members reads. Austin officers later closed part of the southbound frontage road of Research Boulevard and Anderson Square to manage traffic. A large law enforcement presence assembled at the scene, including Texas Department of Public Safety personnel, while a crowd of onlookers gathered.

According to The Statesman, a dark blue Toyota Corolla could be seen parked under the overpass at Research Boulevard and West Anderson Lane. The vehicle showed damage to its passenger-side door along with what appeared to be bullet holes.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is handling the investigation, according to an investigator with Texas DPS.

Without any available details on the shooting, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), who represents parts of the Austin area, rushed to social media to condemn the Trump Administration. “The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning. As the facts emerge, I am demanding a full, independent investigation, immediate release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law. Over and over, ICE has shot people and then lied about what happened. We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability,” the far-left congressman posted on social media.

Authorities have not publicly detailed the sequence of events, whether the shooting occurred during a targeted enforcement action, a traffic-related stop, or another type of encounter, or whether body-worn cameras captured the incident. Additional details are expected in the coming hours.
