Russia Plotting To Bomb Britain, Other Ukrainian Allies: Polish PM

Russia is preparing possible missile and drone strikes against countries backing Ukraine, according to a stark warning from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, raising fresh fears that Moscow could deliberately push the war closer to NATO territory.

Tusk told Poland’s parliament that intelligence assessments point to Russian plans for hybrid attacks against nations supporting Kyiv.

Britain, one of Ukraine’s most prominent military backers, could potentially be among the countries at risk, although Tusk did not specifically identify the UK as a planned target.

“We know he is plotting something bad. However, for us the most important task is to prepare for various scenarios.

“We will certainly not naively accept such messages that Russia has goodwill and will start behaving properly. There is no indication of this.”

Tusk described the intelligence as “very consistent and convincing” and warned Moscow could attempt to disguise future attacks as accidents in an effort to test NATO’s willingness to respond.

“There is a real risk that drones or other types of missiles could penetrate the territory of one or more countries on the eastern flank and even cause damage, while the official explanation will be that there was an accident.”

Russia has summoned Britain’s charge d’affaires in Moscow to issue a formal protest over the UK’s weapons supplies to Ukraine.

Britain has pledged to provide Ukraine with the military equipment it needs to resist Russia’s occupation.

The warning came after Poland scrambled fighter jets and temporarily closed the airports in Rzeszow and Lublin during a major Russian missile and drone assault on western Ukraine near the Polish border.

No violation of Polish airspace was reported during that attack.

Russia has already been accused by European governments of carrying out sabotage, drone incursions and other hybrid operations across the continent. The Kremlin has denied responsibility for alleged sabotage campaigns.

Tusk warned that autumn and winter could become a particularly dangerous period as Moscow increases pressure on Ukraine and potentially probes NATO’s response.

The concerns have intensified as Russia expands its use of faster jet-powered drones, giving Western air defenses less time to detect and intercept incoming weapons.

Former British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace called intercepting Russian weapons before they approach NATO territory “the natural next step.”

Poland has also strengthened its own defenses, increasing F-16 patrols and giving its forces authority to respond to Russian military aircraft that violate Polish airspace.

The latest alarm followed another Russian drone strike near the Polish border days earlier.

A Russian drone struck a passenger train in Ukraine roughly two kilometers from Poland shortly after former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other Western officials had traveled along the same route.

No casualties were reported in that strike.

The growing threat has also renewed pressure on NATO members to increase defense spending.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged Britain to establish a clear annual path toward spending 3.5% of gross domestic product on core defense by 2035.

Speaking about Britain’s spending plans, Rutte said: ‘You cannot spend it today, but you can also not wait ’til 2035.

‘And that is why you need a credible path towards that 3.5 per cent, and yearly increments.

‘I think we are on the right path now to make sure that also going forward we stay ahead of the Russians.

‘But again, that means that all of us, the UK and all the others, have to stick to that path to the 3.5 per cent with yearly increments.’

The British government has said NATO-qualifying defense spending will rise to 2.7% of GDP in 2027-28, with a longer-term plan toward the alliance’s 3.5% target expected to be detailed in a future spending review.

Tusk’s warning comes as NATO governments face mounting concern that Russia could use increasingly aggressive drone, missile and sabotage operations to test the alliance without immediately triggering an outright conventional war.

For Poland, sitting directly on NATO’s eastern flank and bordering Ukraine, the danger is no longer being treated as theoretical.
