JUST IN: Five Arrested In Bombing Plot Targeting Overseas U.S. Military Base

Five men were arrested early Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England, after police received a report of three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the air base, which hosts U.S. Air Force personnel.

At about 12:45 local time, Gloucestershire Police received a call relating to the vehicles. Armed officers responded in the nearby village of Whelford and arrested the men on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act.

Counter Terrorism Policing later said they were further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team examined a number of vehicles inside a 400-meter cordon. About 85 households were evacuated as a precaution, and a nearby leisure center was opened for residents who could not stay with family or friends. Aerial footage showed a bomb-disposal robot inspecting three white vans.

Authorities said they believed the incident was contained. They have not publicly confirmed that explosives were found or that RAF Fairford was the intended target, though they said the vehicles appeared to be traveling toward the base.

“We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody. As you would expect we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident. We continue to work with Gloucestershire Police to keep the community safe as we work to gather evidence from the scene,” Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, the nation’s senior anti-terrorism coordinator, said in a statement.

“For operational security reasons we will not discuss specific force protection measures. The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families. We constantly assess a variety of factors that determine what measures we institute or modify to protect our installations, our people and their families,” a U.S. Air Force spokesman said in a separate statement.

RAF Fairford is a British-owned station used by U.S. forces. Officials have not yet disclosed a motive, nor have any of the suspects been identified as of this report.
