Christa Pike’s Lawyers Reveal Her Condition After Botched Executions
Christa Pike remains unconscious on a ventilator after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her, with her attorneys saying she suffered severe swelling, burns and blistering on both arms during the botched lethal injection.
Pike’s lawyers filed an emergency motion Friday asking a court to order the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve all evidence connected to Wednesday’s execution attempt.
The 50-year-old convicted murderer was injected through at least seven needles as the execution team attempted to administer two sets of pentobarbital syringes, according to the filing.
‘At one point, Ms Pike herself offered guidance on where the IV team could attempt access; one needle was bent at a 90-degree angle when it was removed,’ the motion stated.
Her attorneys said Pike could be heard crying, whimpering and breathing loudly as the procedure continued.

During the execution attempt, Pike reportedly complained about severe pain in her arm.
‘my arm feels like it’s about to burst open,’
At another point, she asked, ‘does this happen like that?’
By Thursday night, Pike remained hospitalized in critical condition.
Her attorneys said she was ‘intubated, on a ventilator, and remains unconscious,’ while receiving treatment at a Nashville-area hospital.
Pike had spent roughly three decades on Tennessee’s death row after being convicted in the brutal 1995 murder of Knoxville Job Corps classmate Colleen Slemmer.

Her lawyers said the problems during Wednesday’s execution may have involved improperly placed IV lines that allowed pentobarbital to enter surrounding tissue instead of properly entering her bloodstream.
They said both of Pike’s arms were swollen, burned and blistered when she arrived at the hospital.
‘Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms Pike’s body,’ the lawyers wrote in the court filing.
According to the filing, the execution team then administered a backup set of pentobarbital syringes rather than stopping the procedure after the apparent IV problems.

Pike’s attorneys are now seeking to preserve records, equipment and other evidence from the failed execution as they examine what happened and consider her remaining legal options.
‘We are working closely with those closest to Christa to respect her wishes, safeguard her privacy and protect her rights as a patient during this extraordinarily difficult time,’ said Luke Ihnen, attorney for Pike with Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee.
‘We ask that the public and the media respect that privacy as well.’
The filing also points back to Pike’s previous legal challenge, in which her attorneys argued that her individual medical conditions could complicate a lethal injection and expose her to cruel and unusual punishment.
Those concerns included thrombocytosis, post-traumatic stress disorder and small veins, according to the filing.
‘Her concerns were called ‘speculation’; they were laughed off, scoffed at, and dismissed,’ the lawyers wrote.
The attorneys said the failed execution now raises serious questions about what happened inside the death chamber and whether proper safeguards were followed.
‘In the words of one media witness: we have a lot of questions, and the Department of Correction has a lot of answers that it needs to provide to the public about what happened here. We agree.’
