Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin shared heartbreaking news over the weekend, revealing that his beloved dog Axel has died after 12 years with his family.

Melugin announced the loss Sunday in an emotional post on X, sharing a tribute to the longtime family pet and describing the impact Axel had on those closest to him.

“Really tough weekend. Flew home to day goodbye to our sweet boy Axel after 12 years of pure joy and love with him. He was such a good big brother and pack leader for our adopted border pups. Accepted them immediately. And he helped our family through the loss of my dad more than he’ll ever know. Will miss him so much. Love you forever Axe ❤️”

Melugin also shared photos of Axel as he remembered more than a decade of companionship with the dog.

The Fox News correspondent said Axel had taken on the role of big brother and pack leader for the family’s adopted border pups, immediately welcoming them into the household.

But Bill Melugin said Axel’s impact went far beyond that.

He credited the dog with helping his family through the devastating loss of his father, describing a kind of support that Axel likely never could have understood.

The post quickly drew messages of sympathy from colleagues and followers, including Fox News anchor Bret Baier.

“Sorry for your loss Bill. Axel looks like he was an amazing pal. ”

Melugin, one of Fox News‘ most recognizable correspondents, has become known for his reporting on immigration, the southern border and major federal law enforcement stories.

His Sunday post struck a much more personal tone, offering followers a glimpse into the family life behind his high-profile reporting career.
