Trump Announces Building Of America’s Largest Shipyard Since WWII

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the launch of a shipyard project in Baltimore County, Maryland, that he described as the largest new shipyard in the United States since World War II.

Anduril Industries is providing a $3.7 billion private capital investment to construct the facility at Tradepoint Atlantic within the Sparrows Point complex. The U.S. Navy has awarded Anduril a contract of up to $2.9 billion to manufacture submarine components, with payments tied to demonstrated production outcomes. Combined, the commitments total $6.6 billion directed at expanding capacity in the submarine industrial base.

The facility is planned to exceed 2 million square feet on a 187-acre site and will include a 1,200-foot graving dock, high-bay assembly halls, and reconfigurable production lines. Anduril states that Arsenal-2 will produce complex components and large-scale assemblies for Virginia-class attack submarines and deliver them to General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding for final assembly.

Anduril has described the yard as a software-defined production system using its ArsenalOS platform to coordinate fabrication, inspection, and material movement. A separate 160,000-square-foot Anduril facility in Orange County, California, is intended to support earlier prototyping and qualification work.

Project materials and state announcements indicate the shipyard is expected to create 3,100 direct jobs and support more than 11,000 indirect jobs. Maryland officials have described the total as more than 14,000 jobs, including more than 3,100 permanent positions, and have called the investment the largest single private commitment and largest job creator in the state in more than a decade.

Anduril projects $2 billion in annual economic output, including an estimated $312 million in wages. Permitting and site preparation are to begin immediately, with construction following required approvals. Initial operations are expected in 2030, with production scaling afterward. In addition, Anduril is also developing related component work in California ahead of the Baltimore yard’s opening.

The Sparrows Point site previously hosted Bethlehem Steel operations and was associated with earlier U.S. shipbuilding. Baltimore-area yards produced the first Liberty ship during World War II, and Sparrows Point was historically known for tanker construction. Anduril’s announcement states that Arsenal-2 will return shipbuilding activity to the location.

“Today, we’re officially launching the construction of the largest new shipyard in the United States since World War II, there’s been nothing like what we’re doing today,” President Trump said during Tuesday’s announcement.

“In a tremendous victory for our country and for the city of Baltimore, Anduril is investing $3.7 billion in a state-of-the-art shipyard that will be known forever as Arsenal-2. You’ll build the next generation of American submarines, including autonomous subs, torpedo tubes and critical components for our cutting-edge Virginia-class attack submarines, the greatest and quietest ever built,” he added.
