VIDEO: Melodramatic CNN Hosts Visibly Disturbed After Ilhan Omar’s Home Is Raided

CNN anchors appeared visibly concerned Monday morning as breaking news revealed that federal agents had raided Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C.-area home, launching a discussion about the timing of the criminal investigation just weeks before the midterm elections.

The startling development sent CNN anchor Kate Bolduan scrambling for answers as correspondent Katelyn Polantz detailed the early morning operation targeting one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken political adversaries.

Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant at Omar’s residence Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation confirmed by the Department of Justice.

But rather than focusing exclusively on the allegations surrounding the Minnesota Democrat, CNN quickly turned its attention to the political implications of investigating a sitting congresswoman during election season.

“So some breaking news coming in as we speak. Learning that federal officers have conducted a search, and did so early today, at the home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar,” Bolduan announced.

Polantz confirmed that the Justice Department had secured the warrant and that Homeland Security investigators were responsible for carrying out the operation.

“We don’t have much more indication on exactly what this is, but it appears to be some level of an immigration investigation, given that it’s Homeland Security doing this, and also some of the statements that are coming out, out of the White House, specifically by White House border czar Tom Homan.”

Homan, who previously acknowledged an ongoing investigation involving Omar, declined to reveal additional details when questioned by Fox News.

“Well, I’m not going to get ahead of Todd Blanche on this or Secretary Mullin, but we know this investigation was ongoing for a while. There was a warrant executed this morning, so I’ll leave it at that. The specifics of the investigation, I think I need to turn that over to Todd Blanche or Markwayne Mullin. I don’t want to get ahead of them on commenting on an ongoing investigation.”

The investigation reportedly involves questions surrounding immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.

Ilhan Omar has faced longstanding allegations of immigration-related wrongdoing, accusations she has repeatedly denied. Federal authorities have not publicly announced charges against the congresswoman.

Back on CNN, however, Bolduan appeared particularly interested in whether the Justice Department should have conducted the search so close to Election Day.

“I was going to ask more about that, Katelyn, because it being so close to an election, there, there are, generally speaking, we’ve seen this discussed and been very much highlighted in terms of past investigations and what, what does or should happen within a certain number of days of an election. What is the Justice Department saying about this?”

Polantz explained that the department maintains longstanding guidelines encouraging additional precautions when taking investigative steps within 60 days of an election.

Those guidelines are intended to prevent law enforcement actions from improperly influencing elections, although they do not impose an absolute prohibition on investigations during that period.

With the November elections approaching, CNN‘s coverage highlighted the political fallout surrounding the raid, even as federal authorities remained tight-lipped about the underlying evidence.
