Horrifying New Details Emerge From School Shooting Stopped By Good Guy With A Gun

Horrifying new details have emerged from a deadly elementary school shooting in Oregon, where a 16-year-old gunman allegedly blasted his way through secured school entrances before an armed bystander shot and killed him, bringing the rampage to an end.

Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher were killed Thursday afternoon at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, according to reports.

A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The teenage attacker reportedly used a shotgun to shoot through the locks of secured vestibules designed to prevent unauthorized visitors from entering the building.

The security measures were supposed to provide an additional layer of protection for students and teachers. Instead, the gunman reportedly forced his way into the school’s special education area.

But the deadly attack ended when an armed community member confronted the suspect and fatally shot him before police reached the gunman.

Dispatch audio suggested the armed citizen may have been a student’s father, although authorities have not confirmed his identity.

‘It looks like the shooter has been neutralized, possibly shot by a father at the school,’ a dispatcher reportedly said.

The terrifying ordeal began shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday when a man sitting inside a red Toyota Tacoma outside the school noticed the teenager approaching with a firearm.

The driver reportedly confronted the suspect, who responded by firing several rounds at the pickup.

Photographs showed multiple bullet holes along the vehicle’s passenger side and a shattered rear window.

The driver contacted emergency dispatchers at approximately 12.59 p.m., triggering a massive law enforcement response.

Police arrived around 1.02 p.m., but shortly afterward, officers received word that another bystander had confronted and killed the attacker inside the school.

Investigators have not disclosed the shooter’s identity or motive.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that the teenager used a pump-action shotgun reportedly purchased by his mother.

Inside the school, teachers scrambled to protect terrified children as the nightmare unfolded.

Fifth-grade teacher Kathy Sheil Smith told KPTV that she spotted the armed teenager approaching and immediately alerted the school’s main office.

She then gathered her students into a corner of the classroom, desperately trying to keep them quiet and calm.

‘They were so afraid, the looks on their faces. It was really hard to see, [I] was just trying to calm them down.

‘Some kids were praying, some kids were consoling other kids, but doing so quietly because they know you don’t make any noise.’

Following the shooting, heavily armed officers searched classrooms and evacuated students while confirming that no additional suspects were present.

Heartbreaking scenes unfolded outside the school as frightened parents reunited with their children, while others waited desperately for information.

Thursday evening, grieving families gathered for a candlelight vigil in downtown Bend to remember the victims.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook fought back tears while addressing the tragedy.

‘Today, an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School,’ Cook said.

‘We are heartbroken. We are horrified. This is the kind of thing you hear about in other places and pray that it never happens here… today it happened to our children, our teachers and our families.’

The school district canceled Friday’s classes, athletic events and other activities as the community mourned.

Authorities have not established whether the teenage gunman previously attended the school or had connections to anyone inside.

The investigation is also expected to examine how the attacker managed to breach the school’s security system despite measures intended to keep armed intruders away from students.

Meanwhile, the unidentified armed bystander is being credited in reports with stopping the attack before additional lives could be lost.
