Obama Jumps Into Ilhan Omar Investigation

Former President Barack Obama has broken his silence on the federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), delivering a blistering attack on President Donald Trump’s administration after federal agents raided the Minnesota Democrat’s Washington, D.C., residence.

In a lengthy statement posted to X on Sunday, Obama accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement against political opponents, describing the investigation into Omar’s immigration history as “appalling” and suggesting investigators were pursuing evidence that did not exist.

The former president’s intervention comes nearly a week after Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at Omar’s home, seizing her cellphone and personal records as part of an investigation into potential immigration fraud dating back more than two decades.

“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama wrote. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.”

The investigation centers on questions surrounding Omar’s immigration paperwork and whether she legally obtained American citizenship through her father, who became a naturalized citizen in 2000.

Omar, who immigrated to the United States from Somalia in 1995, maintains that she was 17 when her father became a citizen, making her eligible to automatically acquire citizenship under the applicable immigration rules.

Federal investigators are reportedly examining whether Omar was actually older than her official records indicate, which could potentially undermine the legal basis for her citizenship. Authorities have not publicly presented evidence establishing that the congresswoman committed immigration fraud.

Obama dismissed the allegations as an attempt to manufacture a case against one of Trump’s most outspoken congressional critics.

He accused investigators of searching for a “nonexistent smoking gun” and argued that the federal government was pursuing Omar because of her political opposition to the president.

“The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views,” Obama declared.

However, the Trump administration has maintained that investigators are pursuing potential violations of federal law rather than conducting a politically motivated operation.

White House border czar Tom Homan recently suggested authorities possess substantial evidence, telling Fox News that he had been informed investigators have a “strong case” against Omar. Homan said that investigators would follow the evidence rather than prejudge the outcome.

Meanwhile, Omar’s attorneys have demanded the return of property seized during the raid and accused federal authorities of violating restrictions imposed by the court. The Justice Department has disputed those allegations.

The congresswoman has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, describing the investigation as an effort to intimidate her ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Obama concluded his statement by warning that allowing federal agencies to pursue elected officials over political disagreements could establish a precedent extending beyond the current administration.

“Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same,” he wrote.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no criminal charges against Omar have been publicly announced.
