JUST IN: Democrat Candidate Detained By Israeli Military In West Bank
Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander was detained by Israeli military forces in the West Bank on Wednesday while participating in an olive harvest alongside Palestinian farmers and dozens of activists, setting off a dispute over Israeli security restrictions just weeks before the U.S. midterm elections.
Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 10th Congressional District and former New York City comptroller, was among approximately 80 to 90 volunteers taken into custody near the Palestinian village of Nahalin, outside Bethlehem. The group included American and Israeli rabbis, human rights activists, and other international volunteers.
The incident unfolded after Israeli troops arrived at an olive grove where the volunteers had been working for roughly two hours. Military personnel declared the area a closed military zone before detaining participants and transporting them for questioning.
Lander announced his detention on X, posting a photograph from a bus carrying other participants.
“I’ve been detained by the IDF, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers,” Lander wrote. “The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn’t a crime under any law I know.”
@bradlander has been detained along with @truahrabbis and many other volunteers at the olive harvest today. We are also detained and tweeting from the police van. Hoping to update more soon. https://t.co/LfpBx7GH4e

The Democratic candidate was released several hours later with a warning, although other participants remained in custody at the time of his announcement.
Lander suggested his political standing influenced the decision to release him, saying authorities appeared to recognize his public profile.
“I’ve been released from IDF custody with a ‘warning,’ apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee),” he wrote.
Israeli authorities defended the operation, arguing that the group had entered an area requiring prior coordination with security officials.
The Israel Defense Forces said the harvest had not been properly authorized and that conducting agricultural activity near an Israeli community without coordination presented potential security risks.
Military officials also accused some participants of using the harvest to provoke confrontations rather than simply assist farmers.
However, the explanation was challenged by reporting from The Times of Israel, which cited an official Israeli Civil Administration map indicating that the particular area where volunteers were detained did not require advance authorization.
The military subsequently maintained that the landowner needed to coordinate future harvesting activities with authorities.
I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee).
But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention. For harvesting olives. They should all be released immediately.
To be clear: Palestinians face far worse consequences every day. These detentions by the IDF are one more attempt to undermine Palestinians’ right to harvest their olive groves, travel on their roads, and live in their homes. Yet one more element of escalating, and very clearly state-sponsored ethnic cleansing.
We’ll update on their status as soon as we hear.

The confrontation also drew attention to the broader political dispute surrounding Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank.
Rabbis for Human Rights, the organization involved in coordinating the visit, said Palestinian farmers had been unable to access the affected olive groves for approximately three years.
The organization maintained that its participants were engaged in peaceful agricultural work and had agreed to comply with military instructions.
Israeli police later reported that dozens of detainees had been released, while four foreign activists faced possible deportation proceedings following questioning about their political activities. The episode comes as Lander prepares for the November 3 election in a heavily Democratic New York congressional district.
Lander has emerged as an outspoken critic of Israeli government policy and previously called for an end to U.S. military assistance to Israel.
His campaign has received support from prominent progressive Democrats, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Wednesday’s confrontation follows a similar incident involving Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California, who was briefly detained by Israeli forces during a West Bank visit in July. Lander condemned the latest detentions after his release and demanded that authorities free the remaining volunteers.
