WATCH: Supporters Pray Over Trump In Touching Clip From Iowa Campaign Event

Former President Donald Trump is shoring up his support among the religious right, nowhere more so than in Iowa where a group of evangelists recently joined him to pray for his victory over President Joe Biden.

On Saturday, the former President rallied the faithful during a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids where he ripped Biden as “the destroyer of American democracy” who spoiled a prosperous economy he inherited. Following his speech, a small crowd led by a local pastor gathered around Trump, stretching their arms out in prayer.

“The gates of Hell will not prevail against us. We speak this over [Trump]. We pray for protection over him, I pray for protection over his family. Lord God, all the weapons formed against him will not prosper,” prayed the pastor to a collective hallelujah of “yes!” from the audience.

“Lord they will come to nothing, and the traps that have been laid against him. Lord, the people who laid the traps will be caught in their own traps. So Father we thank You now for this great favor. I pray that President Trump will trust in You… and acknowledge You in all his ways and You will direct his path,” he continued.

It is a fact of Republican presidential politics that evangelical Iowans hold sway over the state’s first-in-the-nation caucus where President Trump commands nearly 45 percent of the vote. Far behind are Ron DeSantis at 17.5 percent, Nikki Haley at 15.3 percent, and the remaining cast of also-rans are all polling below five percent according to Five Thirty Eight. Former Vice President Mike Pence, a devout Christian counting on support from the faithful, ended his bid for the presidency last month. In October, President Trump released a list of over 100 religious leaders across Iowa who have endorsed him.

A common refrain among religious voters is citing the Republican frontrunner’s support for pro-life causes and the appointment of three justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, resulting in the overturning of Roe v. Wade. One recent study suggested over 30,000 pregnancies came to term that would have otherwise been lost to abortion.

“People of faith truly appreciate what former President Donald Trump did for this country,” said Jeremy Higgins, a lead pastor at the Calvary Community Church in Cedar Rapids.
