James Carville says Trump could drop out of presidential race
On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” “2020 Politics War Room,” co-host James Carville repeats his prediction last week and delves on it. His theory? President Donald Trump could drop out of the presidential race before November.
In the article by MarketWatch, the Democratic strategist suggested that Republican senators will try to distance themselves from the current president this fall. The senators he stated included Mitch McConnell (R-Ky), Matha McSally (R-Ariz), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Dan Sullivan (R-Ark.) In a sarcastic note, Carville proclaimed, “This is the great ‘Moscow Mitch’ strategy. ‘After Labor Day,’ we’re going to turn on him.’ That’s really going to work. McSally and Sullivan and Lindsey have been licking his boots for three years and nine months. But boy, come Labor Day, we’re going to get some separation.”
He also noted, “the chances of that working are zero. He is gonna drag the whole outfit down with him.” With that, he trailed on the anti-Trump campaigns such as the Lincoln Project” bludgeoning him every night” and people “tens of millions of dollars” in order to stop the president from being re-elected, or in Carville’s words, “to extract this menace from the body politic.”
A line that also resonated in the article was Carville’s words when he said, “Trump has no idea of what he’s getting ready to get hit with. There are a lot more patriots in this country than he ever thought.”
Just last week, on his appearance on MSNBC, Carville said there’s no chance for Trump to be re-elected. He said to host Brian Williams, “I think there is a better chance Donald Trump does not run for re-election than he is re-elected. If you just take the events of the last ten days, obviously he has no control over the virus, he has no control over the tension in the streets- he’s lost control over everything.”
Carville believes that Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, or someone else, will sit down and talk to the president. He even said that this talk is a “real man-to-man, a come-to-Jesus as people used to say, I don’t know what is it. That is, that which can’t continue will not.”
The Democratic strategist is not the only person who suggests the president will withdraw his re-election bid. This week, Fox News’ Charlie Gasparino tweeted part of his report where some major GOP players ponder the thought of the president withdrawing.
BREAKING— (thread)GOP operatives are for the first time raising the possibility that @realDonaldTrump could drop out of the race if his poll numbers don’t rebound. Over the weekend I spoke to a sample of major players; one described Trumps current psyche as “fragile.” I’m

Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh debunked the report, claiming that the thoughts of GOP operatives that believe the president will withdraw from the election are “the granddaddy of fake news.” Murtaugh stated, “Everyone knows that media polling has always been wrong about President Trump-they under-sample Republicans and don’t screen for likely voters-in order to set false narratives. It won’t work. There was similar fretting in 2016, and if it had been accurate, Hillary Clinton would be in the White House right now.”
