JUST IN: Trump Gets Great News Out Of Georgia

Another day, another poll showing former President Donald Trump dominating President Joe Biden in a state where he was narrowly edged out in 2020.

The latest results in a poll conducted in a poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution show the Republican frontrunner beating the Democratic incumbent 45% to 37% in a head-to-head matchup if the general election were held today. Compounding Biden’s misery is the bleeding support he’s experiencing among minority voters, including 10% of Black Georgians who said they plan to sit out the election entirely.

The president’s approval ratings in the state he narrowly won four years ago is similarly alarming. Sixty-two percent of voters disapprove of Biden’s job performance, with a slim majority saying they “strongly disapprove”. Among independents, who comprise nearly one in five voters, Biden is underwater as well; 37% support him while 54% disapprove of his performance. Black voters, who make up 48% of newly registered voters in Georgia, are split.

Repeating his 2016 win in the Peach State will not be a cakewalk for Trump either. He has sparred with Republican Governor Brian Kemp and other statewide Republicans over allegations and a criminal trial regarding efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results. One in five Republican poll respondents said they don’t plan to come home to Trump in November, signaling the Republican still has much work to do to shore up his base.

Still, partisan voters tend to return to their camps in the final weeks of a general election. President Trump’s dominant showing at the Iowa caucuses on Monday has signaled the GOP nominating process is effectively over, giving him more time to appeal to GOP voters who may still be uncertain about supporting his return to the White House. As anti-Trump Republicans like Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson have suspended their flailing campaigns, the moderate wing of the party has coalesced behind Nikki Haley, who needs a decisive victory or close second-place finish in New Hampshire next week to remain in the race.

As establishment Republicans begin to rally around Trump, expect the pressure to increase on Governor Kemp and other statewide Georgia Republicans to do the same. Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones (R-GA) and a majority of the state’s GOP congressional delegation, including firebrand star Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have already announced their endorsements of President Trump. The governor has committed to supporting Trump if he is the party’s nominee.
