Reporter Who Criticized Novak Djokovic Over His Vaccine Status Dies Suddenly While Covering Australian Open

British tennis reporter Mike Dickson died suddenly earlier this week while he was covering the Australian Open, his family announced in a social media statement.

“We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and Dad, Mike, has collapsed and died while in Melbourne for the Aus Open,” Dickson’s family wrote in a post from his X account. “For 38 years he lived his dream covering sport all over the world,” the statement continued. “He was a truly great man and we will miss him terribly.”

The Daily Mail, where Dickson covered the sport for 33 years, later confirmed his death in a tribute piece. “Dicko was everything you want a correspondent to be – a brilliant news hound, a terrific writer and a friend to so many in his sport. The world of tennis will join us in mourning. He was a giant of a journalist,” wrote global tennis publisher Lee Clayton.

In total, Dickson covered more than 30 sports across 50 countries throughout his lengthy career.

Dickson frequently clashed with tennis legend and world number one Novak Djokovic over his refusal to submit to Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The late writer published several articles in which he argued that Djokovic was ruining his legacy by refusing to take the shot, at times referring to him as an “anti-vaxxer.”

“Novak Djokovic could ruin his chances of becoming the GOAT by refusing to take the vaccine… it is a strange hill to die on for a player who is so desperate to be loved,” reads one of Dickson’s headlines.

Despite their rivalry, Djokovic paid tribute to Dickson’s career and offered condolences to his family in an X post. “Condolences to Mike Dickson family,” Djokovic wrote. “Rest in peace.”
