WATCH: Colorado Sec. Of State Whines About Trump Ruling On MSNBC, Begs Congress To Act
The Colorado secretary of state threw a public tantrum on MSNBC in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling allowing former President Donald Trump to remain on the 2024 ballot.
Jenna Griswold, a Democrat, spun a fairy tale narrative on the liberal network as she reiterated her belief that a single state should have the power to determine whether a candidate for president can run for office.
“My larger reaction is disappointment. I do believe that states should be able under our Constitution to bar oath-braking insurrectionists, and ultimately this decision leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation,” said Griswold.
“But we know that Congress is nearly non-functioning body. So ultimately it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November,” she added.

Tuesday’s ruling stemmed from an appeal brought by the Trump campaign in the wake of a previous decision by the Colorado state Supreme Court, which found the former president guilty of violating the Constitution’s 14th Amendment which prevents “insurrectionists” from holding federal office. Legal scholars have previously suggested the intent of the amendment was to prevent Confederate sympathizers from retaining power following the Civil War.
In a 9-0 ruling, both liberal and conservative justices agreed that states do not have the power to regulate federal candidates, especially those running for president.
“We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency,” the Court wrote according to Fox News.
Previously, Griswold acknowledged in an official statement from her office that “the United States Supreme Court has ruled that states do not have the authority to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment for federal candidates.”
“In accordance with this decision, Donald Trump is an eligible candidate on Colorado’s 2024 Presidential Primary,” she said.
Lisa Rubin of MSNBC spun the news as a way for Trump critics to continue pressing for his removal from the ballot if he is found guilty of criminal activity during one of his ongoing trials.
“You have four justices concurring in the judgment… that they feel they don’t need to decide that Congress is the exclusive enforcement mechanism,” she said, adding both conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett and liberal Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson saying “they don’t need to decide anything more than this is not a right that belongs to the states.”
