WATCH: DC Archbishop Rips Biden, Calls Him A ‘Cafeteria Catholic’
President Joe Biden continues to face widespread criticism and challenges on all fronts. On Monday Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Washington D.C. labeled Biden a “cafeteria Catholic” on CBS for his selective adherence to Catholic teachings.
The remark was made against the backdrop of the Biden administration’s declaration of the “Transgender Day of Visibility,” following a precedent set by the Obama administration, a move criticized by the Trump campaign and many others as an “anti-Christian act.”
“Like a number of Catholics, he picks and chooses dimensions of the faith to highlight while ignoring or even contradicting other parts,” Gregory said, introducing the term “cafeteria Catholic” to describe the president.
The Archbishop’s critique didn’t stop there. “There are things that he chooses to ignore or he uses the current situation as a political pawn rather than saying, look: ‘my church believes this, I’m a good Catholic, I would like to believe this,'” Gregory explained.

Biden, who identifies as a Catholic, has faced criticism from various Catholic groups and individuals who believe that his political positions, especially on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, are at odds with traditional Catholic teachings.
The Catholic Church officially opposes abortion and views marriage as a sacrament between one man and one woman. Critics, therefore, argue that Biden’s support for abortion access, and his endorsement of same-sex marriage conflict with these teachings, leading to claims of him being a “fake” Catholic by many.
Critics were given fuel to their fire this weekend when the Biden administration followed in the Obama’s footsteps and declared March 31 “Transgender Day of Visibility” on Easter Sunday.
“It is appalling and insulting that Joe Biden’s White House prohibited children from submitting religious egg designs for their Easter Art Event, and formally proclaimed Easter Sunday as ‘Trans Day of Visibility’,” the Trump campaign said on Saturday. “Sadly, these are just two more examples of the Biden Administration’s years-long assault on the Christian faith.”
“We call on Biden’s failing campaign and White House to issue an apology to the millions of Catholics and Christians across America who believe tomorrow is for one celebration only — the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” said Karoline Leavitt, the National Press Secretary for Trump.
Children were also prohibited from submitting “religious themed” Easter egg designs for the 2024 “Celebrating National Guard Families” art event at the White House on Easter.
The event was part of the White House’s Easter traditions, which also included the Easter egg hunt. A flyer for the art event, which was open to select children of National Guard personnel, stated that egg designs “must not include any questionable content, religious symbols, overtly religious themes, or partisan political statements.”
Children were instead instructed to design eggs with details relevant to their personal lives. Children were prohibited from egg designs that promote “bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on race, gender, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age.”
Designs from contest winners will be painted by professional artists on real eggs that will then be displayed in the White House. The White House also announced that the annual Easter egg role would focus on “EGGucation,” a continuation of recent years.
