A New Jersey man who was in the U.S. Marine Corps until last week has been slapped with federal charges for making threatening statements about killing white people in a mass shooting, authorities announced Monday.

Joshua Cobb, 23, mentioned two possible targets for a shooting rampage a Jersey Strong gym and an Aldi grocery store in Robbinsville. He also bragged about his easy access to firearms and ability to kill large numbers of people, federal prosecutors have alleged.

Cobb also fantasized about an adrenaline rush that would come from carrying out such an attack. “I’d probably OD on my own adrenaline after the 10th body goes down,” he allegedly wrote in a social media post last March.

“I want to cause mayhem on the white community. The reason i specifically want to target white people is because as a black male, they will NEVER understand my struggles,” the former Marine allegedly wrote in another post in December of 2022. “Same way I will never understand their struggles, but I don’t care to. I want to erase them. All of them really, but in this case as many as I possibly can,” the post continued.

In the December 2022 post, Cobb stated that the attack would occur in New Jersey at some point in 2023. He said that the date would be ““close to an important holiday to their race. I have a location in mind already which I have frequented for the past year and I am certain nobody there is armed to be able to stop me from spraying them to the ground.”

Cobb is charged with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce. He was taken into custody on Friday and is currently being held in the Monmouth County Jail.

Cobb made an initial appearance in federal court in Trenton on Monday. A judge ordered that the defendant be detained pending his next hearing, which is scheduled for Friday.

The 23-year-old joined the Marine Corps and attended basic training from June to October 2023, NJ.com reported. He was then stationed at a Marine base in Twentynine Palms, California in February.

In court papers, federal investigators detailed a lengthy list of disturbing social media posts allegedly made by Cobb. The complaint also lists threats that were found on his phone or made to federal investigators when they interviewed him last month.

Prior to his time in the Marines, Cobb allegedly made a number of posts under the online moniker “ldayUsuffer” in which he fantasized about torturing cats, “progressing” into a serial killer and the struggles of being a black man.

“I promise I will make everyone feel my f***ing pain. My deep, sincere, raw, & sharp pain,” he wrote.

In notes recovered from his phone, Cobb detailed his homicidal plans but stated that he lacked the finances to carry them out at the time. “I currently lack the means necessary to kill as many as I intend to but one day I will have the available resources (finance) to purchase the appropriate weaponry for my killing(s).”

He also frequently voiced his contempt for “privileged white people in New Jersey.”

At one point, Cobb explained that he had zeroed in on the Strong Gym because he knew it was always crowded at 5 p.m. daily. He also explained how “high schoolers” are able to sneak in through a back entrance, which he would utilize to carry out his attack.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited special agents and task force officers of the FBI Newark Joint Terrorism Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy, with the investigation leading to the arrest.
