Key Clinton, Obama Officials Die In Car Crash
On a typically quiet rural road late Friday night in San Diego County, a tragic accident claimed the lives of two prominent political figures from the Bay Area. The crash involved a head-on collision between a Jeep pickup and a Chrysler sedan, which occurred on state Highway 76 near Fallbrook outside of San Diego. The collision resulted in the deaths of four people, including a couple renowned for their contributions to political advocacy and community development.
Hope Wood, 48, and her wife, Peggy Moore, who were both pronounced dead at the scene, were well-respected for their long-standing public service and civil rights work. Wood, recognized by the San Diego County Medical Examiner, was particularly noted for her visionary work in organizing and strategy. Moore, a former president of the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club, was remembered as a force for change in Oakland and across the East Bay.
In their decades of service, the lesbian couple made significant impacts on various political campaigns and civil rights movements. Moore’s career highlights included running the 2014 mayoral campaign for Libby Schaaf in Oakland and playing a crucial role in Hillary Clinton’s presidential primary campaign in California as a senior consultant.
Both Moore and Wood’s lives were intertwined with politics from early on; they first met while working on President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. This led them to establish Hope Action Change in 2019, a consultancy firm aimed at fostering organizational development and coaching.

“It took you two hours to walk anywhere with Peggy — maybe more, because she knew everybody,” Schaaf said according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The former mayor continued, “I’m in such deep grief for myself personally because she’s someone I loved and admired so much. And I’m in grief for democracy. (Moore) is someone who believed everyone should have a voice in government. She never gave up in the beautiful essence of democracy, even when it gave up on her. She infused this nuclear love into everything she did.”

Friends, colleagues, and politicians expressed their sorrow over the loss of such influential figures. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) remarked on their lasting impact, writing, “Both Peggy and Hope made an impact on our community, on our city, on our state, and on our nation that will be felt for generations to come.”

A friend of the couple, Kimberly Ellis, said to NBC San Diego, “These were two almost twin flames that couldn’t bear to be apart in this life or in the other, and they really just had to be together when they left.”
“It’s an incredible loss, not just in the professional political world, but in our personal world as well.” Ellis described Moore as a “giant” in political circles and noted, “She has helped people like former President Barack Obama.”
The details surrounding the crash are still under investigation by local authorities, who have yet to release the names of the other victims involved. Initial reports suggest that the Chrysler sedan swerved into the Jeep’s lane, leading to the fatal collision.
