JUST IN: RNC Headquarters Put On Lockdown Over Suspicious Package

The Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Republican National Committee was driven into lockdown Wednesday morning after local authorities uncovered a suspicious package and ordered a security perimeter for its investigation.

The New York Post reports that it remains unclear what led to the discovery of the package, which one source said appeared to contain a macabre set of items: “It sounds like vials of blood were sent in a package and something broke open.” No immediate reports of injuries were made, though a Hazmat team was called in to further assess the contents.

Journalists on the ground were able to obtain footage of the perimeter and were waved off by police officers guarding access to the RNC’s main entrance. A phalanx of unmarked and first responder vehicles lined the streets, cordoning off access while bystanders told the individual filming to head up the street and away from an area out from that was surrounded by yellow caution tape. Fox News reported that an initial alert about the incident was made shortly after 8:30 a.m. At the time, communications had suggested that a white powder had been discovered. One morning anchor noted that the RNC offices are across the street from the Canon building for the U.S. House of Representatives, home to many freshman congressmen and younger staffers living in the area. The building is set to host a hearing on the use of artificial intelligence in homeland security beginning at 10 a.m., according to an online House schedule.

The incident comes less than 24 hours after the judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s classified documents case ordered the unsealing of documents that showed the FBI authorized the use of deadly force in its August 8th, 2022 raid of Mar-a-Lago. Last month, a deranged man self-immolated in front of the Manhattan court building where the former president’s hush money trial is taking place. Together, the three disturbing events are a reminder to voters about how the states of the 2024 elections have driven both individuals and intelligence services into dangerous behaviors.
