Authorities have indicated they are not letting up in their investigation into how former “Friends” star Matthew Perry died tragically last year after ingesting a deadly amount of ketamine.

TMZ first reported that officers with the Los Angeles Police Department have partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as they seek to find the source of the illicit drugs that Perry took, leading to a heart attack in October of 2023. Sources with the investigation told the outlet they are primarily concerned with who provided the drug and under what circumstances. Ketamine in recent years has been utilized by health providers as an emerging alternative medicine for several ailments.

Sources add that the investigation has been going on for several months, but it’s unclear how far along investigators are in the probe. TMZ adds that several “key people” in Hollywood have been interviewed about Perry’s death in a hot tub late at night. Some of those interviewed have lengthy histories of drug abuse, the insiders added, not for culpability but rather more information about who has the connections to provide ketamine to celebrities like Perry.

The 54-year-old actor was found unresponsive by his assistant on the night of October 28th, 2023. First responders declared him dead at the scene. While it was initially believed that Perry somehow drowned, a toxicology report later found that he died as a result of acute effects of ketamine. Information provided to TMZ by the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office stated that Perry had been receiving ketamine therapy for depression and anxiety in the week leading up to his death. However, the office concluded that the medically-sanctioned ketamine treatment was not related to his death.

Fans and alums of the iconic show mourned Perry’s death in the weeks and months that followed. Jennifer Aniston, perhaps the most well-known actress from “Friends,” told People in December that she grieved for her friend who struggled to accept love and support from others. “I hope he can know that he was loved in a way he never thought he was,” she said. “I also have to say I think Matthew Perry’s dialect, his way of speaking, created a whole different world. We went with his lead, in a way. It just added something to our joy.”

Perry struggled with addiction dating back to his days on the show, which ran for 10 seasons between 1994 and 2004 and averaged 25 million viewers per week. The series finale in 2004 was watched by 52.5 million viewers, making it the fifth-most-watched series finale in television history, according to the New York Times. Despite the popularity, Perry struggled for most of that time with addiction to alcohol, cocaine, and other substances. At one point he estimated that efforts to reach sobriety had cost him at least $9 million.
