‘MY GOODNESS’: CNN Data Expert Stuns Host With Poll Showing MASSIVE Shift To Trump

Before the jury delivered a guilty verdict against Donald Trump for 34 felony charges, the political world was brisk about the implications for the 2024 presidential race. Yet, an underlying factor could be even more decisive. Although the trial’s outcome has captured the headlines, the key to the next election may lie in six swing states that Joe Biden won in 2020. According to the latest polls from RealClearPolitics, with the election less than six months away, Biden currently trails Trump in all these pivotal states.

On Tuesday, CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten highlighted that foreign-born voters are showing a preference for Trump over Biden. According to two recent polls by CNN and SSRS, Trump is ahead of Biden by 3% among U.S. voters born outside the country. During the segment, co-host Kate Bolduan described Trump’s immigration rhetoric as “harsh” and “extreme.” Enten noted, however, that this has not negatively impacted Trump’s poll numbers concerning the issue.

“No matter how you phrase it, you will see that more voters today trust former President Trump over President Biden, but the margins can change depending on how it is,” Enton said. “So this is a better job on border security and immigration, which tends to be one of former President Trump’s best questions.”

“My goodness gracious,” Enton continued. “Look at this huge jump that Donald Trump has gotten. He is now ahead on this issue by 27 percentage points. So it’s not just that immigration is more at the top of voters’ minds than it was four years ago. It’s that who they trust on the issue has changed tremendously.”

In the recent CNN poll, Trump’s support among registered voters remains solid at 49% in a direct contest against President Joe Biden, mirroring the figures from CNN’s January national poll. Biden’s current support is at 43%, slightly down from 45% in January. Additionally, public perception of Trump’s presidency appears to have shifted. 55% of Americans view his time in office as a success, compared to the same percentage who deemed it a failure in a January 2021 poll conducted just before he left office and shortly after the January 6 breach on the U.S. Capitol.

Current sentiment about Biden’s tenure revealed a predominantly negative view among Americans. 61% of respondents consider Biden’s presidency a failure thus far, a slight deterioration from January 2022, when 57% labeled his first year as unsuccessful. In contrast, 39% currently view his presidency as successful, a drop from 41% last year.

The divide along party lines is stark. While 92% of Republicans believe former President Trump’s presidency was successful, only 73% of Democrats affirm the same about Biden’s ongoing term. Among independents, 51% regard Trump’s presidency as successful compared to just 37% who hold a favorable view of Biden’s performance.

Public opinion on Biden’s handling of his duties remains predominantly negative. Disapproval stands at 60%, with only 40% approving, a sentiment that has been consistent in CNN polling for over a year. Even on issues where Biden has historically been stronger, such as healthcare, approval only reaches 45%, and it’s similar for his handling of student loan debt at 44%.

His lowest approval ratings are related to his management of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, where only 28% approve of his actions. This issue sees particularly high disapproval rates, reaching 81% among those under 35 years old, and even a majority of Democrats disapprove at 53%.
