San Francisco 49ers first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in the crime-ridden city, police announced Saturday.

The 23-year-old rookie wide receiver got into a scuffle with a thief who was attempting to steal his Rolex watch around 3:37 p.m. on Saturday. During the robbery, the rookie got into a struggle over the thief’s gun, at which point he was shot in the chest.

The suspect was also injured and both were taken to a local hospital, police said. Pearsall is currently in stable condition, local outlet KTVU reported.

Charges are pending against the suspect, who has yet to be identified. A press conference will be held at San Francisco General Hospital to share updates on the investigation, KTVU reported. Anyone with information relating to the shooting has been asked to come forward.

“My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time,” San Francisco mayor London Breen said in a statement.“We will provide more updates, including on his condition, as I receive them.”

In a social media post, Pearsall’s mother, Erin, shared that the bullet traveled through her sons chest and exited through his back, miraculously missing vital organs.

A 17-year-old suspect, who was also shot, has been taken into custody.

Pearsall was taken with the 31st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft earlier this year. He previously played parts of five college seasons between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Florida Gators.

The rookie was unable to appear in any preseason games due to a shoulder injury and he had just recently returned to practice prior to the shooting.
