Ailing Actress Tearfully Reveals She Was Misdiagnosed: ‘Back To Square One’

Actress Christina Applegate has revealed a devastating new twist in her yearslong health battle, breaking down in tears after doctors told her she may have been misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The 54-year-old Hollywood star, who has spent more than five years battling debilitating symptoms, shared the shocking development during an emotional episode of her “MeSsy” podcast with co-host Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Applegate said a doctor recently informed her that she does not have MS, the neurological disease she publicly revealed she had been diagnosed with in August 2021.

But instead of celebrating, the actress was left devastated. Her symptoms haven’t disappeared, and she still has no answers about what is happening to her body.

“She came into my room and said, “Congratulations, you don’t have MS”,” Applegate recalled.

“I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”

The former “Married with Children” star explained that the unexpected news has left her feeling more uncertain about her future than ever.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better. I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse. So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me.”

Doctors are now reportedly working to determine what has caused the symptoms that have upended her life since 2021.

The ordeal has been especially painful for Applegate, who stepped away from acting as her condition deteriorated.

Once a familiar face on television and movie screens, the Emmy-winning actress has spent years relying on mobility aids, including canes and wheelchairs.

She described the emotional toll of losing her independence and career while struggling with an illness that remains unexplained.

“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it,” Applegate admitted.

“But I lost everything. I lost my job. I lost – I’m sorry. What do you say to someone who’s been living with this for six years – God, I’m so sorry – because it stopped my life.”

Applegate emphasized that the change in diagnosis has done nothing to improve her physical condition.

“I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, “You don’t have MS.” Nothing magical happened.”

The actress also confessed that losing the diagnosis has left her questioning her identity after becoming a prominent advocate for people living with MS.

“It’s weird because I feel like I let everybody down, It’s this weird feeling because I became this – you and I, the poster children for MS.”

Applegate said she remains in shock as doctors search for another explanation.

Neurologist Dr. Marwa Kaisey of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center explained during the podcast that diagnosing MS can be complicated because no single test can definitively establish the condition.

“We don’t have one single test for MS. It’s not like we have something like a pregnancy test that says, Yes. You have it. No. You don’t. It’s a list of criteria.”

Kaisey also highlighted research suggesting that a significant number of patients initially diagnosed with MS actually have other conditions.

“Almost one in five of these people who’d been told they had MS, some for decades, didn’t actually have it. And a majority of them were on medication to treat their MS.”

The revelation follows an especially difficult year for Applegate.

She was reportedly hospitalized in Los Angeles beginning in late March before returning home in August, according to TMZ. The specific reasons for her extended hospitalization were not publicly disclosed.

Applegate previously revealed that her symptoms frequently leave her confined to bed, although she makes an effort to take her teenage daughter, Sadie, to school.

Despite years of medical appointments, hospitalizations and uncertainty, the actress remains determined to understand what is happening to her.

For now, Applegate faces the heartbreaking reality of starting over medically while continuing to battle the same debilitating symptoms that forced her Hollywood career to a halt.
