NEW: Suspected Afghan Terrorist Crosses Southern Border
U.S. Customs on Border Patrol announced on Sunday that they had apprehended an Afghan national who is on a U.S. terror watch list. The number of suspected terrorists apprehended at the southern border has risen dramatically since President Joe Biden took office.
San Diego County District Supervisor Jim Desmond told local media that the arrest took place on May 10.
“On Wednesday, I received word from Border Patrol Officials that an Afghani on the terror watchlist was arrested at our Southern Border. This apprehension occurred after the individual crossed the border alongside a group of migrants near Otay Mesa, CA,” the statement said.
Once arrested, border patrol officials confirmed the suspect was on the Terrorist Screening Database after a fingerprint scan. “This should serve as a stark reminder to President Biden and the Federal Government on the critical need for maintaining a strong border,” Desmond added.

The ongoing migrant surge following the expiration of Title 42 has heightened fears that suspected terrorists could take advantage of the situation and enter the country.

In the fiscal year 2022, a record 98 suspects on the U.S. government terror watch list were apprehended at both the southern and northern borders. This figure represented a massive increase over Biden’s first year in office, when 16 suspects were nabbed. In 2019, when the border faced a more minor crisis due to a surge in migrant caravans, the number was zero.
The rising national security threat comes as key cabinet officials, as well as federal law enforcement agencies, claim that the border is secure. In August, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified before the Senate and claimed that there is no “imminent threat from a foreign terrorist organization on the border at the moment,” adding that terrorists are always looking for any vulnerability to “exploit.”
