Anti-Trump Actress’ Latest Film Bombs At The Box Office
Jennifer Lopez’s latest movie, Unstoppable, had a rough debut at the box office, to say the least. The sports drama, which portrays Lopez as Judy Robles, the mother of one-legged wrestling champion Anthony Robles, made a dismal debut in the UK, during its opening weekend. The film barely lasted a week in theaters before being pulled.
Despite the promotional push—including Lopez’s appearance on The Graham Norton Show—audiences didn’t bite. Some say the film’s underperformance could spell trouble for Lopez’s career, which has seen a string of mixed results in recent years. The movie garnered just £3,112 during its opening weekend in the UK, ranking as the 55th most popular film upon release, The Sun reported.
According to DailyMail, the film had a limited one-week release in cinemas, intended as a qualifying run for awards season. Whether her political stances played a role in the film’s flop is up for debate, but one thing is clear: Unstoppable failed to gain any traction at the box office.
Lopez has been vocal in her criticism of Donald Trump, which some speculate may alienate segments of her potential audience. Throughout his presidency and subsequent political campaigns, she has used her platform to express opposition to his administration’s actions, particularly concerning immigration and responses to Puerto Rico.

In 2020, during her Super Bowl halftime performance, Lopez made a political statement by displaying a large Puerto Rican flag and featuring children in illuminated cages, interpreted as a critique of Trump’s immigration policies and his administration’s handling of the Mexico–United States border crisis. The NFL attempted to remove the cages from the performance, but Lopez refused.
In October this year, Lopez endorsed Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris for president and criticized the Trump campaign after comments about Puerto Rico were made during his New York City rally. Speaking at a Harris campaign rally in Las Vegas, Lopez emphasized the importance of voting and stated, “We are Americans… this is our country too.”
“And we know how to take the trash out, Donald Trump — trash that has been collecting since 2016, and that’s you, Donald Trump,” said Lopez.
Lopez has experienced significant successes and notable setbacks in her film career. One of the most prominent disappointments was the 2003 romantic comedy “Gigli,” in which she starred alongside Ben Affleck. It holds a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is often cited among the worst films in history. Lopez herself acknowledged the negative impact of “Gigli” on her career, describing the experience as feeling “eviscerated.”
Unstoppable will have another shot at finding an audience when it streams on Prime Video starting January 16, 2025.
