Popular comedian Reginald “Reggie” Carrool was shot and killed on Aug. 20, according to law enforcement authorities. He was 52 years old.

According to reports from the Southaven Police Department in Mississippi, police responded to calls about an isolated shooting located in the area of Burton Lane. When they arrived on scene, they found Carroll suffering from a series of gunshot wounds.

“The officers and medical personnel provided life saving techniques but the individual succumbed to his injuries,” they went on to say in a statement published on their website.

Police also said, “One person of interest is detained at this time. There is no ongoing threat to the public and this remains an active scene. We ask that you stay out of the area for the time being.”

Local law enforcement continued to keep the community updated as the situation unfolded.

“The individual has succumbed to his injuries. This is still an on going investigation with one male being questioned. We won’t have any further information/names of the parties involved at this time,” they said on social media.

Another post said, “One male is in custody and has been charged with the murder of Reginald Carroll.”

“Our thoughts our with the family of Mr. Carroll. Thank you to the community for their patience and understanding,” they stated.

Reggie is well known for his stellar stand-up comedy routines, which he performed in clubs all over the United States. Many of his friends, loved ones, and fellow comedians paid tribute to him on social media.

Carroll also made many appearances on television, including in the movie “Rent & Go,” along with a 2000 episode of “The Parkers,” which also starred Oscar-winning actress Mo’Nique.

Mo’Nique took to Instagram where she said, “This is why I say treat people the best you can because you never know if you’ll get a chance to see them again, and the last time me and my brother Reggie… was together, that’s what it was, an amazing time, being on tour together, being on that road together, what a time, so I have no sad tears because all of our time together was amazing.”

One of the clubs in Baltimore that Carroll performed at, Mobtown Comedy, also wrote a tribute to the comedian on Instagram, saying, “Rest in power @comedianreggiecarroll, thank you for being one of the OGs who supported us early on. The Mobtown family and the Baltimore comedy community are very saddened by this loss of one of our city’s great talents. Sending our prayers to Reggie’s family.”
