Ben Affleck Announces Tragic Loss

Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of actors Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck, has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was 83.

Her family announced the news Thursday through an obituary after her death on June 2.

Chris Anne is survived by her sons, Ben, 53, and Casey, 50, and five grandchildren: Indiana, 22, Violet, 20, Atticus, 18, Fin, 17, and Sam, 14.

Her grandchildren were described in the obituary as ‘the animating force of her last two decades.’

Doctors had told Chris Anne in December that she had six months to live, according to the obituary.

Her final wish was to see her grandson Atticus graduate from high school.

She made it to the ceremony May 31.

Two days later, she died peacefully in her sleep.

Chris Anne was born in New York City in December 1942 and went on to graduate from Harvard University.

She spent 35 years as a public school teacher before retiring in 2008, choosing the classroom over the kind of celebrity orbit her sons would later enter.

Ben spoke about his mother’s career in a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

‘My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master’s there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school.’

Her obituary described a woman with a sharp sense of social conscience who made use of an elite education while staying skeptical of the sheltered world around it.

As a student at Nightingale-Bamford, she once condemned Jim Crow and was scolded by a teacher for not considering the “other side,” according to the obituary.

Chris Anne responded by calling a Woolworth’s store to ask whether it had refused business from Black customers.

The episode reflected what the obituary called her willingness to acknowledge that she could be wrong while never using uncertainty as an excuse to sit still.

She later traveled to the South during the 1960s civil rights era.

Her obituary said Chris Anne ‘taught literacy classes in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, marched against the Vietnam War, and reveled in 1960s counterculture.’

She carried those values into her classroom, where the obituary said ‘every student, whether just arrived from Haiti or Cambridge upper crust, was a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself.’

Chris Anne and her ex-husband, Timothy Affleck, welcomed Ben in 1972 and Casey in 1975.

The family moved to Massachusetts in the mid-1970s, where Chris Anne taught school.

The couple divorced when Ben was 12, and Timothy later moved to California.

Casey credited his mother in a 2006 interview with Boston Magazine for keeping family traditions alive during a difficult period.

‘She always made us go on family vacations,’ Casey said. ‘When you’re a kid, you just want to stay home and hang out with your friends. You don’t want to go to your grandparents’ house.

‘But tradition meant a lot to her. She just insisted. We had a lot of fights about that. But now I love it and those are some of my favorite memories.’

Chris Anne also helped open the door to Ben’s early acting career.

She introduced him to casting director Patty Collins, her former Harvard roommate, who helped a young Ben land auditions for television films and commercials.

Ben reflected on that early break in a 2007 interview with Parade.

‘I got into acting as a young child on account of a sort of arbitrary thing,’ he said at the time. ‘A friend of my mom’s was a casting director so, really as kind of a lark.

‘I had a couple of acting jobs that had just enough exposure to give me the option to continue if I wanted to. I followed through with it.’

Chris Anne remained at Ben’s side as his career took off.

She attended the Academy Awards with Ben and Matt Damon in 1998, when the longtime friends won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Good Will Hunting.”

Ben later recalled the moment in a 2023 Vanity Fair interview.

‘We were sitting next to our moms and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms. I remember how everyone had made such a big thing out of it as if this was such a novelty.

‘I remember thinking, being insecure, like, “Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?” Who else do you think we would bring?’

The obituary noted that while ‘Chris was suitably proud of her descendants’ achievements … she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority.’

Chris Anne was also close with Ben’s ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, and the two remained connected after Ben and Garner split.

She was seen with Garner and the family over the years, including at a Thanksgiving celebration at Garner’s Los Angeles home last year, according to Page Six.

Chris Anne also attended Ben’s 2022 wedding to Jennifer Lopez, despite suffering a leg injury the day before the ceremony.

After retiring from teaching, she remained active in causes she cared about, including campaigning for former President Barack Obama, helping form the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine and serving on the board of the Sustainable Cape project in Truro, Massachusetts, according to her obituary.

After receiving her diagnosis late last year, Chris Anne contacted her friend Josh Laub to record ‘oral histories of his time as a principal in the South Bronx,’ according to the obituary.

p>Chris Anne lived long enough to see the family she built become part of Hollywood history.

But her own legacy was not measured in red carpets, tabloid headlines or Oscar statues.

It was in the students she taught, the causes she fought for and the family traditions she refused to let fall apart.

She helped raise two sons through a broken home, pushed them toward opportunity and stood beside them when the whole world finally learned their names.

In the end, her final act was not public or glamorous.

It was a grandmother holding on long enough to watch her grandson walk across a graduation stage.

Two days later, she was gone.

For the Affleck family, the loss is not just the death of a mother.

It is the loss of the woman who held the whole story together before Hollywood ever came calling.
