Daily Wire editor and top-rated conservative podcaster tried out his best Trump impression when telling the story of his first meeting with the former president.
“It was funny, it was very funny,” Shapiro said of his first meeting with Donald Trump. He then explained how he was called over by the former president while waiting in a photo line. “And Trump is like, ‘Ben Shapiro, Ben Shapiro. Really enjoy your work, Ben Shapiro. You used to love Ron DeSantis. I think you’re going to love us a lot more. I think you’re going to really enjoy being with us,'” Shapiro continued while attempting his best Trump impression.
Shapiro, who backed Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), was a fierce critic of then-candidate Trump during the 2016 presidential election. He resigned his position as editor-in-chief at Breitbart News midway through the campaign after he accused then-Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski of assaulting a reporter for the outlet, Michelle Fields, in addition the outlet’s pro-Trump stance.
He ultimately came around on Trump after he was elected in 2016, though he has remained critical of a number of his policy positions.
While Shapiro opted to support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the Republican presidential primary, he has since endorsed former President Trump and intends to fundraise for him. “It’s time for the party to coalesce around the guy who is going to beat Joe Biden. And that guy is Donald Trump,” Shapiro said after Trump’s early primary victories.
