Biden Under Fire For ‘Disgraceful’ Move After Jimmy Carter’s Death
One of President Joe Biden’s final acts in office, while ostensibly meant to honor Jimmy Carter’s passing, is also being taken by some as a slight against President-elect Donald Trump on his first day in office.
Though long expected, Carter’s death at the age of 100 runs up against Trump’s swearing-in on January 20th, a constitutional day of obligation that repeats every four years without interruption. The passing of the torch from one president to the next has been cited by many as a hallmark of American democracy and is often referred to as the “peaceful transition of power.” Next year, however, the day will appear to be a somber one as the incoming Republican president swears his oath of office with the flag at half-mast.

An executive order from President Biden appoints January 9th, 2025, as a national day of mourning for the death of Carter, a tribute which requires the lowering of flags at the White House, all public buildings and grounds, and all military and naval stations for a period of 30 days. Historic photographs of President-elect Trump placing his hand over the Bible and reciting the Presidential Oath of Office will forever be marred by the half-mast flags and may appear to future generations to be an ignominious sign of his return to power.

On social media, Democrats are gleeful about what the optics will portray for Trump, long seen as the most controversial U.S. president in modern history. The Daily Mail chronicled some far-left users’ reaction to news of Biden’s executive order. “I’m so sad for this great man’s passing but this is going to p**s off the orange clown so much and I’ve convinced myself this was Jimmy’s plan the whole time,” one person quipped. Another added, “Can’t help but smile knowing flags will be at half mast during Trump’s Inauguration to honor Jimmy Carter, one of the most decent humans to walk the earth and the very opposite of who’s to come. His parting gift: US flags will be at half mast on all federal buildings on Trump’s Inauguration Day.”
“Perfect way for us to mourn the death of American conservatism,” one user wrote ruefully. Someone else replied, “Flags will be half mast on Inauguration Day and that will be a detraction from #CriminalTrump on his big day,” while another chimed in, “How appropriate the flags will be flying half mast on Inauguration Day.” One person blamed Biden for his timing. “Biden didn’t do this, his admin did in poor taste. Disgraceful,” they wrote.
Not his doing but can't help but smile knowing flags will be at half mast during Trump's inauguration to honor Jimmy Carter, one of the most decent humans to walk the earth and the very opposite of who's to come.

In response, MAGA supporters are suspicious about the timing of President Biden’s announcement, which they believe is meant to detract from the pomp and circumstance of Trump’s long-awaited second term. “DemocRATS made the official announcement at this time to ensure the flags would be flown at half-mast during the second Inauguration,” one person wrote on X.
Carter, a progressive one-term president who left office deeply unpopular amidst a stark economic recession, was vocal in his criticism of Trump during his first term. While appearing on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in 2018, the then-93-year-old took a shot at American voters for rejecting Hillary Clinton one year earlier. “Does America want kind of a jerk as president?” Colbert asked Carter one year into Trump’s first term. “Apparently, from this recent election, yes. I never knew it before,” Carter responded.
In a statement on Truth Social, the incoming president took the high road, offering a dignified response to Carter’s passing. “President Jimmy Carter is dead at 100 years of age. While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for. He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!” he wrote Sunday evening.
