Legendary NFL Coach Bill Belichick Turns Heads With Shocking New Coaching Job
Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick, the most successful coach in league history who guided the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, is headed to college football in a shocking career move.
Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels have finalized a three-year deal for the future Pro Football Hall of Fame member to take the helm of the program, the program announced in a statement on Tuesday evening.
“I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my Dad and treasured those times,” Belichick, 72, wrote in a statement of his own. “I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”

According to a report from Outkick, Belichick is set to make roughly $30 million over the course of the deal, which includes incentives.
The legendary coach’s future had been the subject of intense speculation after he and the Patriots agreed to mutually part ways at the conclusion of the 2023-24 NFL season. Belichick had been the head coach in New England since 2000, leading the team to nine Super Bowl appearances and three wins.
Belichick, whose coaching career began when he worked as a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts in 1975, notched two additional Super Bowl victories while serving as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He holds the record for Super Bowl appearances and wins as a coach, and has the third highest all-time win total among NFL head coaches with 302.
The Chapel Hill move came as somewhat as a surprise to football fans, as Belichick had been the subject of several NFL coaching vacancies over the past year. At 72, the legendary coach appears determined to expand on his legacy with success at the college level. The Guardian US reported that Belichick had handed the university’s athletic director a 400-page “organizational bible” that details structure, payment plans, staffing choices and more.
The new coach will be bringing over his son, Stephen Belichick, from the University of Washington to serve as his defensive coordinator. Belichick reportedly made the request that Stephen will step in as his successor when his contract expires.
North Carolina will constitute Belichick’s first head coaching job at the college level. His father, Steve Belichick, was a longtime assistant coach at Navy.
During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, Belichick confirmed that he was in talks with the university, adding that he has spent significant time studying the college game over the past year. “So it’s been, it’s been a good year for me. I’ve learned a lot,” he said. “So, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to Chancellor [Lee] Roberts, and we’ve had a couple of good conversations. So we’ll see how it goes.”
