Bill Burr Claims Illegal Aliens Do Not Increase Housing Costs: ‘Basic Math’

In a recent sit-down with Rolling Stone, comedian Bill Burr claimed that illegal aliens do not driving up housing costs in the United States. He described his claims as being supported by “basic math.”

In a wide-ranging interview with Rolling Stone editor David Fear, Burr discussed political divisions within the United States and claimed that federal immigration agents would eventually be used to target American citizens. “It used to be we hated the Russians. Now it’s like, Texas hates California, California hates Texas. These people hate Florida. Everybody hates New York. It’s like, ‘Guys, same teams. We’re on the same teams here,'” Burr said.

He connected that observation to remarks he has made onstage about Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “I was talking about that ICE stuff onstage, talking about my people, white people. We’re not nearly as upset as we need to be, because we don’t see ourselves going into the van. I go, ‘Who do you think’s going in the van next?’ And this guy in the crowd yells, ‘Liberals!’ And I go, ‘Did you just say liberals?’ Like, dude, you’re literally talking about half of your team. They’re gonna work their way back to you eventually.”

Burr framed the country’s splits as something other than a conventional partisan contest. “This is not a battle of left and right. This is the working man versus this new era of robber barons,” the comedian, whose net worth is estimated to be around $25 million, went on to say.

On housing costs, Burr said the primary cause was not illegal immigration. “Listen, the reason why, you know, people can’t afford a house is not because of some illegal immigrant who’s making less than minimum wage. I mean, that is basic math. Okay? And there’s a finite amount of money. Okay?” Burr claimed. “So if one person is taking 90% of it, eventually, you know, people have to live under a bridge. Some people.”

Despite Burr’s comments, a July 2024 analysis from the Heritage Foundation found significant increases in housing costs under the massive inflow of illegal aliens during President Joe Biden’s administration.

E.J. Antoni, chief economist at the organization’s Institute for Economic Policy Studies, noted that millions of people who entered the United States illegally over the preceding three and a half years increased housing demand. He estimated the inflows at around 10 million and noted that the figure exceeded the population of at least 40 states.

If that population were concentrated in Georgia, Michigan, or North Carolina, he wrote, those states’ population and housing demand would roughly double. In Pennsylvania, the increase would be as high as 80 percent.

The commentary argued that a large, rapid rise in demand, occurring while housing supply remained constrained, contributes to higher prices and has been associated with a doubling of the median monthly mortgage payment. Antoni stated that claims that unauthorized immigrants lower prices by expanding construction labor lack supporting empirical evidence specific to that population.

He concluded that reducing unauthorized entries and removing people who entered illegally would ease excess demand.
