Attorney General Pam Bondi made a bombshell announcement Wednesday, revealing that the Department of Justice has filed charges against the state of New York, Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder for failing to enforce immigration law.

Speaking at a press conference, Bondi made it clear that the new DOJ is taking action to protect American citizens, specifically highlighting the devastating impact of illegal immigration on families across the country.

“We’re here today because we have filed charges against the state of New York. We have filed charges against Kathy Hochul. We have filed charges against Letitia James and Mark Schroeder, who is with DMV,” Bondi stated. “This is a new DOJ, and we are taking steps to protect Americans.”

The lawsuit comes amid growing outrage over New York’s sanctuary policies, which Bondi and federal prosecutors argue have placed American lives in danger. The case was brought forward in part due to Tammy Nobles, the mother of a young woman who was brutally murdered by an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador.

Nobles, standing alongside Bondi at the press conference, shared her tragic story, detailing how New York’s refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities allowed her daughter’s killer to remain in the country.

“New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops. It stops. It stops today,” Bondi said. “We sued Illinois, and New York didn’t listen, so now, you’re next.”

The charges, filed by the DOJ, allege that New York state officials, including Hochul and James, actively undermined federal immigration enforcement efforts, endangering public safety. Both Hochul and James have vocally opposed federal immigration enforcement, and their administration’s policies have been linked to high-profile crimes involving illegal aliens.

Upon taking office as Attorney General, Bondi has implemented a series of directives aimed at sanctuary jurisdictions, mandating the cessation of funding to any that “unlawfully interfere with federal law enforcement operations.” She urged the department to initiate enforcement actions against sanctuary cities or states that defy the federal government’s immigration enforcement strategies according to CBS News.

One memo stated, “State and local jurisdictions must comply with applicable immigration-related federal laws,” and further clarified that “state and local actors may not impede, obstruct, or otherwise fail to comply with lawful immigration-related directives.”

Additionally, in a separate memo, Bondi focused on dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, noting that “additional resources and thoughtful charging decisions” would be essential in combating illegal drug trafficking, and emphasized the department’s goal of the “total elimination” of these groups.

Last week, the Justice Department requested a federal judge to promptly invalidate sanctuary policies in Illinois and Chicago. They argued that state and local authorities “are an obstacle to the Federal Government’s enforcement of the immigration laws and discriminate against federal immigration enforcement.”
