The gunman who indiscriminately fired upon bar patrons in Austin’s busy entertainment district last night has been identified. FBI investigators are treating the incident as a potential act of terrorism after a Quran was found in the shooter’s car, according to a report from Karol Markowicz of the New York Post.

Markowicz reported that the gunman has been identified as Ndiaga Diagne, an American citizen born in the West African nation of Senegal. He lived in Pflugerville, Texas prior to carrying out the attack.

“The shooting is being investigated as motivated by ideology. A Quran was found in his car,” Markowicz added.

Prior reporting indicated that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force quickly joined local authorities due to preliminary evidence found at the scene. While speaking at a news conference on Sunday morning, Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran of the FBI’s San Antonio Field Office indicated that the shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism.

“Obviously, it’s still way too early in the process to determine an exact motivation, but there were indicators on the subject and then his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said.

Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported that the gunman was wearing a shirt reading “Property Of Allah” while he carried out the shooting. Current Revolt’s Tony Ortiz shared a photo sent by a source that appeared to confirm that detail.

The New York Post reported that Diagne, 53, had lived in the U.S. for about 15 years. He previously lived in New York City from 2000 through 2008.

The gunman had a history of arrests in the Lone Star state prior to carrying out the attack.

The shooting began around 2 a.m. local time Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street in downtown Austin’s busy entertainment district, located not far from the University of Texas.

According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, authorities received a call about a man shooting from a large SUV that had been circling the block. “At one point, he put his flashers on, rolled down his window, and began using a pistol, shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio and that were in front of the bar,” Davis said.

The gunman then exited the vehicle with a rifle and continued to fire at passersby and bar patrons. Police who had already been deployed to the district to handle weekend crowds were able to respond in less than a minute. The shooter was then shot and killed by responding officers.

Three people, including the gunman, were killed in the attack. An additional 14 victims were wounded, at least three of them critically.
