A tragic aviation accident has claimed the life of the husband to Congresswoman Mary Peltola (D-AK) during a flight in Alaska Wednesday morning.

The Democratic congresswoman’s chief of staff announced the sudden death of Eugene Peltola Jr. on X.

“We are devastated to share that Mary’s husband, Eugene Peltola Jr.—‘Buzzy’ to all of us who knew and loved him—passed away earlier this morning following a plane accident in Alaska,” said Anton McParland in a statement.

“He was one of those people that was obnoxiously good at everything. He had a delightful sense of humor that lightened the darkest moments,” the statement continued. “He was definitely the cook in the family. And family was most important to him. He was completely devoted to his parents, kids, siblings, extended family, and friends – and he simply adored Mary. We are heartbroken for the family’s loss.”

Rep. Peltola hails from western Alaska and is one of the few Native Americans in Congress. She was elected to Congress just last year after serving multiple terms in the state’s legislative body during a 10-year stretch from 1999 to 2009. In the following years, she served as a judge of the tribal court to the Orutsararmiut Native Council and a member of the Bethel City Council.

Condolences from Peltola’s colleages poured in on X following the news.
