BREAKING: Crucial Trump Cabinet Nominee Has Finally Been Confirmed
President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, was officially confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Tuesday evening. Bondi is the 11th Trump cabinet nominee to be confirmed after former U.S. Rep. Doug Collins was confirmed as Veterans Affairs secretary earlier in the day.
Despite strong opposition from Democrats, Bondi’s nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in a 12-10 vote last week. Senators then voted along party lines in a 52-46 vote to end debate on the nomination and move to a floor vote.
Tuesday’s floor vote broke down almost exactly along party lines, with all 53 Senate Republicans voting to confirm. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) provided the lone Democrat “yes” vote.
Bondi previously served two terms as the Attorney General of Florida and later advised President Trump on a number of legal matters. She played a key role in successfully defending the president in his first impeachment trial and later assisted with challenges to the 2020 election results.
During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, Senate Democrats consistently launched attacks over her objections to the 2020 election results and the January 6 Capitol protests. In one notable exchange, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) screeched about “weaponization of the Justice Department” under President Trump throughout the entirety of his time slot.
“Will it be your advice to the President: ‘No, Mr. President. I need to go over them on a case-by-case basis. Do not issue blanket pardons.’ Will that be your advice to the President?” Schiff pressed on the topic of January 6 pardons early in the hearing. Bondi replied, “Senator, I have not looked at any of those files. If confirmed, I will look at the files for the pardons as well as the ongoing investigation.”
President Trump later issued pardons for more than 1,500 January 6 prisoners due to the selective and malicious nature of the prosecutions. “What we learned is that she is a tough but fair career prosecutor who built her reputation by enforcing the rule of law,” Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said after the hearing.
Bondi has long suggested that she will be launching multiple investigations into suspicious conduct surrounding the 2020 election once she officially takes office. It is also possible that criminal investigations will be launched over the politicized investigations of President Trump and his supporters, including the one launched by former Special Counsel Jack Smith .
Smith’s team, along with prosecutors who worked on the January 6 prosecutions, were fired earlier this week. Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove has also fired dozens of FBI agents who worked on the cases and directed acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll to turn over a list of all employees who worked on them. The list — which amounted to roughly 40 percent of the agency’s 38,000 employees — was turned over on Tuesday.
